class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How El Ni\u00f1o, climate change and warming oceans could combine to supercharge the world\u2019s weather<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By weather reporter\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/tyne-logan\/7645410\">Tyne Logan<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Of course, in any one year there is always going to be extreme weather events.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But Dr Gallant said\u00a0this year,\u00a0records were not\u00a0just being broken\u00a0\u2014 they were being\u00a0smashed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s really made us stand up and take notice, because it\u2019s not just in one place,\u201d she said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A sign\u00a0of what\u2019s to come<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>It is still too too early to say<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0whether the individual weather events were made more likely by climate change, or other\u00a0natural influences\u00a0like El Ni\u00f1o.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Dr Gallant said what was clear was the nature of weather events had changed, and it told a story of what the world may be in for in the year\u00a0to come<\/em><\/strong><em>, particularly in the realm of heat.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe\u2019re entering territory where climate change is starting to become a much more dominant signal than it has been in the past, and things are only going to get more interesting,\u201d she class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can Dr Gallant say the nature of weather events has changed, that the current cluster of weather events is a sign of things to come, while simultaneously admitting she doesn\u2019t know whether climate change or the likely gathering El Nino has affected current weather events?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Dr. Gallant was to make a firm statement, like \u201cthe incidence of extreme weather events will double over the next 10 years\u201d, or \u201cAntarctic sea ice will disappear completely by 2030\u201d, those would be testable prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the global climate has a history of embarrassing climate scientists who make testable predictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps climate scientists have learned caution, through watching their colleagues endure multiple&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2023\/06\/08\/arctic-ice-a-history-of-failed-predictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ice free arctic<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/category\/end-of-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end of snow<\/a>&nbsp;humiliations over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
