It\u2019s a case of burn, baby burn when these things self-immolate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The staggering rise in the number of turbine fires and total turbine collapses has caused insurers to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stopthesethings.com\/2023\/02\/16\/risk-premium-insurers-baulk-at-paying-out-for-hundreds-of-wind-turbine-fires-collapses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ramp up the premiums they require to insure them<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understandably, neighbours are getting sick and tired of being covered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stopthesethings.com\/2023\/05\/30\/safety-claims-incinerated-locals-smothered-with-toxic-smoke-from-burning-wind-turbines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with palls of toxic smoke<\/a>\u00a0when these things burst into flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time the pyrotechnic pandemonium takes place in I said to myself, \u2018Something odd is going on here,\u2019 so I came looking to see what was happening,\u201d said Listowel native, Warren Howard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salman Hossain was heading to Goderich\u2019s beach from Toronto when he saw smoke in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt first, I thought nobody saw it, and I should call 9-1-1, but then you [Scott Miller] showed up, and told me what was going on,\u201d said Hossain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What Hossain and Howard saw was thick black smoke streaming from the top of a towering wind turbine, just off of Golf Course Road, two concessions north of Goderich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fire was spotted around 6:30 a.m. By, 9 a.m., the main fire, which was centred on the nacelle, or main mechanical and electrical box atop the turbine, was out. But, flames continued to spread down one of the blades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goderich fire crews remained on scene for much of the day to ensure nothing falling from the turbine sparked a fire on the ground. Extreme dry conditions sparked a burn ban in Huron and Bruce County earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got to be careful about these things. Luckily, there\u2019s no crops in the fields. We\u2019re dry, but there\u2019s nothing to burn at the moment,\u201d said Howard, who also works for Wind Concerns Ontario and sits on the Multi-Municipal Wind Turbine Working Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the fire was so high off the ground, nearly 100 metres up, firefighters couldn\u2019t actually put it out. It appears the turbine has a fire suppression system, and the fire simply burned itself out, although Capital Power, who operates the 22 turbine Kingsbridge 1 Wind Farm, where Saturday\u2019s fire happened, said an incident investigation will tell them more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the second wind turbine fire at the Kingsbridge 1 Wind Farm, which was constructed in 2006. The last fire in 2013 was very similar, with damage focused on the nacelle, and fire crews forced to watch the fire from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Howard thinks sprinkler systems should be mandatory on all Ontario wind turbines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t get up to the thing they call the \u2018nacelles,\u2019 so you gotta have sprinkler systems up there when fires start. There\u2019s a lot of oil up there,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one was injured in Saturday\u2019s turbine blaze, which was contained to the single turbine. It\u2019s unclear how long or how much it will cost to fix the damaged turbine, but the next few weeks will be busy for the wind farm operators, Capital Power, as they investigate the damage done 100 metres in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey do have a risk.
