The fossil fuel industry has spent billions on winning over the public. Green activists must learn from its tactics<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s happening all over \u2013 biblical downpours in\u00a0<\/em>New York state<\/a>, unquenchable\u00a0<\/em>fires in Canada<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and yet humanity is not acting as if it is confronting a planetary emergency. Extreme weather is fast becoming the norm in the US, and yet\u00a0<\/em>Americans tell pollsters it is a low priority<\/em><\/strong>, ranking it\u00a0<\/em>17th out of 21 national issues in a recent Pew survey<\/a>. Even when the impact is personal, as it was\u00a0<\/em>for many Australians when bushfires raged through the country in 2019, opinions prove stubbornly hard to shift<\/em><\/strong>: one study found that among those \u201cdirectly impacted\u201d by the fires, around\u00a0<\/em>a third saw no connection to the climate<\/a>. They were \u201cunmoved.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can this be? How can we, like Nero, fiddle while the Earth burns? \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This specific problem, like the climate crisis itself, is made by human beings \u2013 which is simultaneously enraging and encouraging. Enraging, because it is born of a greed that puts gargantuan profit ahead of a habitable planet. Encouraging, because most problems made by human beings can be fixed by them. Enter the climate movement \u2013\u00a0<\/em>the scientists, the activists, the campaigners<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0who have done so much for so long to combat this threat. Except, it turns out,\u00a0<\/em>they are part of the problem<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0too.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trouble is,\u00a0<\/em>they have not been communicating the threat loudly enough<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0or in the right way. \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet\u00a0<\/em>\u201cclimate change\u201d doesn\u2019t work either. Mere \u201cchange\u201d is too gentle:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0it doesn\u2019t indicate whether the change will be negative or positive. It is not immediate: it hints that its consequences will be felt only in the future, when we are feeling them right now. Which is why this newspaper is right to speak of a climate crisis or emergency.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
