Numerous corporate media outlets drove the narrative that July 3-5 was the hottest 72-hour stretch ever on record, citing a data tool from the University of Maine which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned is not as dependable as traditional observational data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0New York Times<\/a>,\u00a0Fortune<\/a>,\u00a0Axios<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0CBS News<\/a>\u00a0each cited the University of Maine\u2019s Climate Reanalyzer in various Thursday reports asserting that this week\u2019s global temperatures broke the previous record for hottest three-day stretch. NOAA \u201ccannot confirm\u201d the Reanalyzer\u2019s findings, adding that the Reanalyzer\u2019s \u201cdata (is) not suitable to be used as a proxy for actual surface temperatures and climate records,\u201d NOAA Director of Strategic Communications Lori Arguelles wrote in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios\u2019 Thursday headline asserted that \u201cEarth sees three hottest days on record,\u201d while The Times wrote in its Thursday story that \u201cthe past three days were quite likely the hottest \u00a0in Earth\u2019s modern history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

CBS News ran a chyron on a Thursday television segment which read, \u201cEarth sees third straight hottest day on record,\u201d while the first half of Fortune\u2019s Thursday headline stated that \u201cEarth hits record heat third day in a row.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough NOAA cannot validate the methodology or conclusion of the University of Maine analysis, we recognize that we are in a warm period due to climate change, and combined with El Ni\u00f1o and hot summer conditions, we\u2019re seeing record warm surface temperatures being recorded at many locations across the globe,\u201d Arguelles added in her statement to the DCNF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Reanalyzer uses observational data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP),\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to the Reanalyzer\u2019s website. The Reanalyzer shows that this week was the hottest week it has ever recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NCEP is part of the National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA,\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to the National Weather Service\u2019s website.\u201cThe situation we are witnessing now is the demonstration that climate change is out of control,\u201d United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said of the heat,\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to The Guardian. \u201cIf we persist in delaying key measures that are needed, I think we are moving into a catastrophic situation, as the last two records in temperature demonstrates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York Times, Fortune, Axios and CBS News did not respond immediately to the DCNF\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
