The electric car revolution is stalling,<\/strong>\u00a0of that there can no longer be any doubt. It has left the\u00a0big global carmakers floundering,<\/strong>\u00a0uncertain of how to proceed in a race they reluctantly entered in the first place.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electrification was initially met with fierce resistance. But\u00a0once politicians held a gun to the heads of company bosses<\/strong>\u00a0with a series of cliff-edge deadlines for phasing out the combustion engine, carmakers had\u00a0little choice but to go all-in<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Century-old business models were declared dead<\/strong>\u00a0and ambitious\u00a0plans<\/strong>\u00a0hurriedly drawn up\u00a0to electrify<\/strong>\u00a0entire portfolios from small city run-arounds to family saloons and SUVs,\u00a0at astronomical cost. Even Ferrari<\/strong>\u00a0has embraced the movement \u2013 much to the consternation of petrolheads everywhere.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with electrification barely off the starting grid, one by one the big carmakers
are already pulling back as demand badly falters.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkswagen<\/strong>\u00a0is so concerned about flagging sales that it has taken the extraordinary decision of\u00a0halting electric vehicle production at one of its biggest plants.<\/strong>\u00a0Assembly lines for electric models will be paused for six weeks at the Emden factory in northwest Germany and 300 of its 1,500 staff laid off after sales fell 30pc short of forecasts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means\u00a0production<\/strong>\u00a0of the new VW ID.7 electric model, which had been due to commence in July will be\u00a0pushed back<\/strong>\u00a0until the end of the year. The ID.4 electric SUV and the upcoming ID.7 electric sedan will also be delayed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are experiencing strong customer reluctance in the electric vehicle sector,\u201d
plant boss Manfred Wulff said.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

That is remarkably\u00a0plain language from the largest car manufacturer<\/strong>\u00a0on the planet, and a company that recently announced plans to invest \u20ac120bn (\u00a3103bn) over the next five years in \u201celectrification and digitalisation\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes months after Ford poured cold water on the shift to electric
with thousands of job losses in Europe.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric vehicle production is unable to support anything like the same number of jobs that petrol and diesel models are able to sustain, it said. Boss Jim Farley estimates that\u00a040pc fewer staff will be needed to develop battery versions.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A generation of pure electric vehicle makers has hardly fared any better. On Tuesday,\u00a0Lordstown Motors, the US electric truck specialist<\/strong>\u00a0that Donald Trump once heralded as the saviour of a depressed Ohio town,\u00a0filed for bankruptcy protection.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Even Elon Musk has been forced to repeatedly\u00a0cut the price of Teslas<\/strong>\u00a0in a desperate effort to prop up demand and protect market share.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s the setback at VW that stands out, raising serious questions about whether\u00a0politicians are making the catastrophic mistake of forcing electric cars on a public that doesn\u2019t want them<\/strong>. Indeed, the decision to impose strict\u00a0deadlines for the phase out of petrol cars<\/strong>\u00a0could turn out to be one of the\u00a0most ruinous policy decisions of our lifetimes.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Think about it for a second:\u00a0an entire industry not only forced to abandon a product that the vast majority of people still want and use<\/strong>, but also\u00a0bullied<\/strong>\u00a0into channelling all its resources\u00a0into making something<\/strong>\u00a0on a colossal level that\u00a0there simply isn\u2019t the market for<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 at least not within the horrendously short timeframe that is being imposed on car manufacturers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s industrial self-sabotage and a commercial, economic and social catastrophe in the making. But what\u2019s worse is that the\u00a0damage risks being far greater in the UK<\/strong>\u00a0than anywhere else in the Western world\u00a0thanks to the Government\u2019s myopic obsession with arbitrary net zero targets<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

While the rest of the industrial world seems to have largely settled on a 2035 deadline for petrol and diesel phase out,\u00a0ministers, for reasons destined to remain a mystery, have decided Britain needs to hit this milestone five years earlier<\/strong>\u00a0than everyone else.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It makes no sense at all, and yet the ramifications threaten to be huge. By diverting capital into something that lots of people essentially don\u2019t want, it\u00a0risks inflicting massive losses on an already fragile UK car industry.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It is pure fantasy to imagine that Britain<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 with a dearth of battery factories (consultants Alix Partners estimates as much as a third of Britain\u2019s battery requirements will need to be imported), a paucity of chargers and dramatically higher energy costs \u2013\u00a0will be in any position to go fully electric in the next seven years<\/strong>. And the Government simply isn\u2019t capable of solving any of these challenges in time, if at all.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0UK risks<\/strong>\u00a0becoming the unfortunate guinea pig in a costly and dangerous experiment that persuades the rest of the world to push their own deadlines out even further, turning this country into\u00a0an example of how not to become a nation of electric car owners.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
