In the 1980s, the Swedes set out to ditch nuclear power and meet a 100% renewable energy target. Now, in the mother of all reversals, Sweden has decided to follow its neighbour \u2013 Finland \u2013 with its own move towards safe, reliable and affordable nuclear power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finns are well ahead of the curve. When Finland powered up its latest nuclear power plant in April wholesale power prices dropped 75%, almost overnight. The Olkiluoto 3 plant (above) is fully operational, generating 1,600 MW of electricity on demand (irrespective of the weather), and delivering 15% of the country\u2019s power needs. Nuclear now provides around half of the country\u2019s total electricity generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result of adding Olkiluoto 3\u2019s ever-reliable output to the Finnish grid was a decline in average spot electricity prices from \u20ac245.98 per MWh in December to \u20ac60.55 per MWh hour in April<\/a>. So much for the wind and solar cult meme about nuclear power being \u2018too expensive\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nordics are no fools, and anyone with half a brain will be keen to emulate. As the pieces below, attest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re baaack!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 40 years after the country voted to phase out nuclear power, Sweden is now looking to build more nuclear reactors after its parliament formally abandoned its 100% renewable energy target to meet net-zero by 2045.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday the country modified its net zero targets to 100% \u201cfossil-free\u201d which its right-leaning government creates the conditions for the return of nuclear power to the country\u2019s energy mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need more electricity production, we need clean electricity and we need a stable energy system,\u201d Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson said in parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observers said the decision implicitly acknowledges the low quality of unstable wind and solar, and is part of a general collapse of confidence in the renewable energy agenda pioneered in the Nordic countries and in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British lobby group Net Zero Watch, which describes the net zero roadmaps of Western nations as \u2018utopian and unsustainable,\u2019 welcomed the move. In recent weeks it blasted the Bank of England for spending \u00a3150,000 to measure the carbon footprint of plastic bank notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says the net zero plans envisioned by the International Energy Agency (IEA) \u2014 which are the basis of Canada\u2019s own net zero efforts \u2014 \u201care dangerously expensive and will result in painful reductions in living standards for all but the richest, as well as national weakness, societal instability and the eventual failure of the decarbonization effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLiving close to Russia focuses the mind, and the Swedish people not only wish to join NATO, but also to ground their economy in an energy source, nuclear, that is physically sound and secure, unlike renewables which are neither,\u201d said Dr. John Constable, NZW\u2019s energy director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor the time being the UK government continues to live in a fantasy of their own making, but we are coming to the end of the green dream.\u201d The UK has every reason to follow Sweden\u2019s lead, but should go even further by increasing the use of natural gas, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCurrent UK climate policies are ill-informed and utopian and will almost certainly fail to deliver Net Zero emissions by 2050, or ever. It also runs a high risk of deep and irreversible societal damage,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Constable\u2019s proposal envisages a gas to gas-nuclear system, unwinding the extreme costs of the failing renewables fleets, delivering immediate consumer relief and a rapid program of low-carbon combined cycle gas turbine construction on existing sites, leading to a new generation of nuclear employing small modular reactors in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It offers valuable lessons for Canada which released its own net zero roadmap based on IEA numbers this week, translating them into a 75% reduction in fossil fuels, including a 60% cut in natural gas and 83% less oil sands production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA small population in a large country such as Sweden can afford to reject fossil fuels, relying on nuclear and hydro and biomass, but the United Kingdom, and other substantial industrialized economies need to face the facts, and understand that only a gas to nuclear pathway is viable to remain industrialized and competitive,\u201d NZW said.\u00a0Western Standard<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweden\u2019s botched \u2018green dream\u2019 a warning to us all<\/strong>

Two days ago, the new centre-right Swedish government announced an energy policy U-turn. You won\u2019t read much about it because the media\u2019s confirmation bias means it mostly reports only \u201cnews\u201d to reinforce climate alarmism. And the nature of Swedish politics \u2013 consensual, with multi-party coalitions \u2013 means decisions don\u2019t always stick or mean as much as they seem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, the government\u2019s announcement that it was ditching Sweden\u2019s long-legislated plans for 100 per cent renewable energy by 2040 because the country needed \u201ca stable energy system\u201d is a significant blow to the hitherto unchallenged march to renewables, at least among Western nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson said wind and solar were too \u201cunstable\u201d to meet a modern economy\u2019s 24\/7 energy requirements. Although the government still wants a \u201cclean\u201d energy system, this no longer will be based on renewables but on the nuclear power that currently provides about 30 per cent of Sweden\u2019s total electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need more electricity production, we need clean electricity and we need a stable energy system,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cIn substantial industrialised economies \u2026 only a gas to nuclear pathway is viable to remain industrialised and competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can only imagine the teeth-gnashing hysteria of Swedish child climate activist Greta Thunberg at this announcement, can\u2019t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, Sweden has been at the very forefront of \u201cstronger action on climate\u201d with more than 40 per cent of its power generated by hydro and nearly 20 per cent by wind. Plus, in addition to the 100 per cent renewables by 2040 commitment, Sweden had a commitment to countrywide \u201cnet zero\u201d by 2045. Sweden\u2019s move is the biggest step so far towards climate realism, but it\u2019s also just the latest move away from the \u201ctransition at any cost via renewables\u201d mindset that has dominated Western governments\u2019 thinking for the past two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Far from diminishing its reliance on nuclear, France is now set on increasing it. And while the green-left government in Germany has finally closed its last three nuclear plants, it still imports plenty of nuclear power from French plants across the border. It also is extending brown coal mining to keep the lights on in the absence of Russian gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Austria, the government recently moved to revive closed coal-fired power generation. And a sizeable ginger group of British Conservative MPs thinks the only way to create a winnable contest with Labour at the next election is to drop the bans on new petrol and diesel-powered car sales from 2030, stop the looming ban on new gas boilers for domestic heating, and allow more exploration and extraction of North Sea oil and gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, here at home, our government is doubling down on the green dream, despite more and more energy experts arguing the transition is going too far and too fast, threatening all the businesses and jobs that depend on reliable and affordable 24\/7 power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an extraordinary article, Alan Finkel recently extolled his vision splendid of forests of wind turbines and fields of solar panels stretching as far as the eye can see. But instead of recoiling from this dystopia, the former chief scientist expected us to embrace it as a necessary element in the supposedly essential move to net zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a revealing speech last year, Energy Minister Chris Bowen enthused about the scale of the challenge ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to the government\u2019s now-mandatory legal target of 82 per cent renewable power generation by 2030, he declared, would require the installation of 22,000 solar panels every day, and the erection of 40 large wind turbines every month for the next seven years. Plus, 28,000km of new transmission lines would have to be constructed for the resultant decentralised grid \u2013 even though, given the intermittency of wind and solar, these would be active only 30 per cent of the time on aver\u00adage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Bowen \u2013 who conveniently neglected the consequential need for \u201cfirming\u201d \u2013 this was a necessary but welcome task, requiring a mobilisation of resources unprecedented outside wartime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to more and more of the people charged with keeping the lights on, and needing reliable power to keep jobs and production going, it\u2019s mission impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the real world it\u2019s simply not happening, given the practical difficulties in getting permissions to build; and it can\u2019t actually happen given the astronomical cost (the government estimated trans\u00admission capital costs alone at $80bn pre-election) plus chronic short\u00adages of material and skilled workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But while Australia seemingly can\u2019t wait to close down all our remaining coal-fired power stations in a bid to save the planet by eliminating our 1 per cent contribution to mankind\u2019s global emissions, outside of the emissions-obsessed West there\u2019s no such indulgence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, according to the just-released Energy Institute\u2019s Statistical Review of World Energy, wind and solar power between them accounted for less than 6 per cent of total global energy usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The much-maligned fossil fuels, oil, gas and coal, together accounted for almost 82 per cent of total global energy consumption, barely down on the previous year, despite near ubiquitous virtue-signalling and green chest-thumping. Even in the global electricity sector, last year wind and solar were less than 12 per cent, while coal and gas usage was at record highs. Yet somehow we think we can close all our coal-fired power stations within a decade and get 70 per cent of our electricity from wind and solar, within just seven years. There\u2019s only one word for this: mad!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it really is necessary to get to net zero any time soon, nuclear power is the only feasible means, yet the Albanese government is almost hysterically opposed to it \u2013 despite the illogicality of opposing on land the nuclear power source that the government is committed to having on our submarine fleet tied up dockside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s really no technical obstacle to having the small modular reactors that many countries are now considering because these have been safely powering ships and submarines for more than a half-century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years Sweden, with its extensive welfare state, strong environmental protections and entrenched social-democratic political culture, has been a role model for the left in Australia. Yet most recently Sweden was the only Western country that refused to lock down its citizens in response to Covid-19, following its existing well-developed pandemic plan rather than mimicking China\u2019s lockdown panic that we imported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outcome: Sweden\u2019s excess death rates have been lower than most other countries, it missed a massive extra debt burden and its citizens largely avoided two lost years. Now, the country that gave us the child prophet of doom, Thunberg, actually may be leading the world into climate common sense.
