class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweden has thrown away the sacred renewables talisman and opened the escape valve from the Temple of WindySolar-Inc. They\u2019ve done the obvious thing anyone worried about CO2 would have done in 1992 \u2014 aimed for nuclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have switched their 100% \u201crenewables\u201d target by 2045 to a 100%&nbsp;<em>fossil-free<\/em>&nbsp;target. It\u2019s still a pagan antipathy of the sixth element of the periodic table. But at least it\u2019s a more pragmatic version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweden topped the EU list for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/01\/20\/which-european-countries-use-the-most-renewable-energy\">renewables share of energy<\/a>&nbsp;in the last tally \u2014 albeit with mostly biomass and hydropower. It was a star of the renewables set \u2014 number 1 on the Climate Council list of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecouncil.org.au\/11-countries-leading-the-charge-on-renewable-energy\/\">\u201c11 countries leading the way<\/a>\u201c. Yet here they are, effectively giving up on the unreliable generators. Sweden\u2019s Government voted to phase out nuclear power 40 years ago, but in June 2010, parliament voted to repeal the policy. The government elected last year seeks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/energy-environment\/news\/sweden-adopts-100-fossil-free-energy-target-easing-way-for-nuclear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to promote<\/a>&nbsp;nuclear power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/swedish-parliament-passes-new-energy-target-easing-way-new-nuclear-power-2023-06-20\/\">Reuters:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson said in parliament, \u201cWe need more electricity production, we need clean electricity and we need a stable energy system.\u201d State-owned utility&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/swedens-vattenfall-plans-new-28-gw-nuclear-reactors-ringhals-2023-01-25\/\">Vattenfall<\/a>&nbsp;is looking at building at least two small modular reactors and at extending the life of the country\u2019s existing reactors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not such a big shift for Sweden.
