href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-56607700\">friction<\/a>&nbsp;between some of the big car firms and the mining concerns, with the car people backing a moratorium but the miners insisting they wouldn\u2019t be able to produce enough for the EV markets without exploiting the sea bed.<\/em><br>\u2013 \u2013 \u2013<br>A vast stretch of ocean floor earmarked for deep sea mining is home to thousands of oddball sea creatures, most of them unknown to science,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-65708806\">says BBC News<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include weird worms, brightly coloured sea cucumbers and corals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists have put together the first full stocktake of species to help weigh up the risks to biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say more than 5,000 different animals have been found in the Clarion Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The area is a prime contender for the mining of precious metals from the sea bed, which could begin as early as this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies want to exploit valuable deep-sea metals in international waters, but have yet to start extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The place is \u201ea wonderfully weird environment\u201c with a plethora of creatures \u2013 \u201eeverything from strange [sea] cucumbers with elaborate sails on their back to beautiful glass sponges,\u201c said Muriel Rabone of the Natural History Museum in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201eWe need to know what the biodiversity is and what we may lose from any mining impacts,\u201c she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers sifted through hundreds of scientific papers and thousands of records in databases to compile an inventory of life-forms in the zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the thousands of \u201eotherworldly\u201c, \u201ebeautiful\u201c and \u201eethereal\u201c animals recorded, only 400 are known to science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Full article&nbsp;<a
