The BBC, Britain\u2019s public broadcaster, announced the launch of a new \u201cdisinformation\u201d unit in its newsroom to combat claimed conspiracy theories and fake news.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), which is funded by a statutory fee on individuals who watch live television under penalty of fine or imprisonment, stated that its news division will include a new squad branded \u201cBBC Verify\u201d to refute misinformation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deborah Turness, the CEO of BBC News, stated that BBC Verify will be composed of approximately 60 journalists \u201cwho will form a highly specialised operation with a range of forensic investigative skills and open source intelligence\u201d and will be deployed to provide fact-checking, video verification, counter-disinformation, and \u201ccrucially \u2013 explaining complex stories in the pursuit of truth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marianna Spring, the BBC\u2019s Disinformation Correspondent, stated that \u201cmistruths can cause really serious harm to society.\u201d Spring, who will host the BBC podcast \u2018Marianna in Conspiracyland,\u2019 claimed she has set up some \u201cundercover accounts\u201d on social media to follow \u201cpolarisation online,\u201d such as what is recommended to users.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the millennial journalist, she is currently studying \u201cthe UK\u2019s conspiracy theory movement,\u201d which she claims has \u201cevolved and intensified\u201d since the Chinese coronavirus outbreak. Spring identified \u201calternative media\u201d as a source of so-called conspiracy theories.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m looking at the way alternative media is funded, I\u2019m looking at its impact on local communities, I\u2019m looking at its connections with far-right figures and also its foreign links,\u201d she said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCould January 6th or the German coup attempt we saw there ever happen in the UK?\u201d Spring questioned.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The BBC, which has been restructuring to cut costs amid government threats to end the contentious licence fee from the public, may be attempting to demonstrate its value to politicians in Westminster, who have repeatedly expressed a desire to monitor the spread of \u2018disinformation\u2019 on the internet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A separate study that same year indicated that only 44% of Britons trusted BBC journalists to be truthful in their reporting, compared to 48% who did not trust its news division to be accurate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
