Ever since the Nord Stream sabotage took place, I\u2019ve argued<\/a> that Ukraine is the most likely culprit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had a strong motive: eliminating Germany\u2019s incentive to defect from the pro-Ukraine coalition. It would have been much less risky for Ukraine than for either Russia or a NATO country. There\u2019s precedent: Ukraine has carried out numerous sabotage operations during the war. And in the summer of 2022, Germany was actually warned about a possible Ukrainian attack on the pipelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in March, various Western newspapers reported<\/a> that \u201cpro-Ukraine saboteurs\u201d may have been responsible. Although there was \u201cno evidence\u201d that Zelensky or his top generals were involved, the saboteurs \u201cmight have connections to the Ukrainian Government or its security services\u201d, wrote the New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its own reporting, the Times<\/em> referred to a \u201csuspected private sponsor, a Ukrainian not affiliated with President Zelensky\u2019s government\u201d, and claimed that his name \u201chas been circulating in intelligence circles for months\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alleged plot involved \u201ca yacht, elite divers, forged passports and the procurement of shaped explosive charges only available to the gas and oil industry\u201d. The yacht, where it is said investigators found<\/a> \u201ctraces of explosives\u201d, was later identified as the Andromeda \u2013 a 50ft pleasure boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As to who the \u201csuspect private sponsor\u201d might be, German newspaper S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung<\/em> reported<\/a> that he is a \u201cUkrainian oligarch\u201d who \u201cused to be active in politics\u201d, and that the sabotage took place on his birthday. All this points to former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, whose birthday is September 26th \u2013 the date of the bombing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the latest development, the Times<\/em> reports<\/a> that Germany\u2019s Federal Office of Criminal Investigation is \u201cexploring fresh leads in a theory implicating Ukraine\u201d. (The theory is the same as before \u2013 the one involving the Andromeda.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators think the attack \u201ccould only have been carried out with help from a state security service\u201d, and they have \u201cuncovered evidence that may point to Ukrainian involvement\u201d. Note that until the reports about \u201cpro-Ukraine saboteurs\u201d appeared, European officials had been insisting<\/a> that a \u201cstate actor\u201d must be responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the two Ukrainians who are said to have founded the company that rented the Andromeda, German authorities have identified two others who may have been part of the ship\u2019s crew \u2013 one of whom is believed to have served in the army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main reason to doubt<\/em> the \u2018Andromeda theory\u2019 is that it\u2019s difficult to believe such a small team of people, using only a pleasure boat, would have been able to carry out the operation. It\u2019s a \u201cJames Bond\u201d theory, as one commentator put it. On the other hand, U.S. national security advisor Fiona Hill has said<\/a> that \u201cUkraine could have found a way of doing this: we\u2019ve seen them be extremely inventive\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from the possibility that Russia is responsible, something of which German investigators are apparently \u201cunconvinced\u201d, the main rival theory is Seymour Hersch\u2019s \u2013 which pins the blame on U.S. President Joe Biden. While his story may yet be corroborated, various inaccuracies and inconsistencies have been identified and I don\u2019t find it nearly as plausible<\/a> as the one implicating Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest inaccuracy in Hersch\u2019s reporting concerns his article<\/a> \u2018THE UKRAINE REFUGEE QUESTION\u2019, where he includes Hungary in a list of countries that are \u201callies of Ukraine and declared enemies of Vladimir Putin\u201d. This simply isn\u2019t true: Hungary\u2019s Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n has been highly critical of Zelensky and is generally considered Europe\u2019s most Russian-friendly leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to leaked documents seen by the Washington Post<\/em>, Zelensky has expressed<\/a> \u201crage\u201d toward Hungary and even suggested blowing up the Druzhba pipeline which transports oil from Russia. So it sounds like the feeling\u2019s mutual. (Incidentally, the Post\u2019s<\/em> revelation constitutes further circumstantial evidence for Ukrainian involvement in the Nord Stream sabotage.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Hersch can\u2019t get basic details right, it\u2019s hard to trust his more audacious claims about the bombing of Nord Stream. I still don\u2019t buy it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
