Up With That?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NERC has invested \u00a325 million in a host of high risk, high reward research projects to tackle critical environment challenges<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/releaseguidelines\">Grant and Award Announcement<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UK RESEARCH AND INNOVATION<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NERC has invested \u00a325 million in a host of high risk, high reward research projects to tackle critical environment challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 44 projects cover the full spectrum of environmental science including geology, atmospheric science, biodiversity and ecology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research will, for example:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>improve our understanding of volcanic activity such as eruptions a lava flows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>age the Earth\u2019s solid inner core<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>investigate historic mass extinction events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>predict future changes to carbon storage and biodiversity of the amazon rainforest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>study new microbes capable of consuming the powerful methane greenhouse gas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establish which species are the most and least resilient to environmental changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lasting 3 to 4 years, the projects have received up to \u00a31.3 million to conduct the research, which is a key part of NERC\u2019s investment portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Sir Duncan Wingham, Executive Chair of NERC, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis investment supports researchers\u2019 curiosity and imagination to enable discoveries that unlock new knowledge.
