The mean annual temperatures (MAT) were more than 14\u00b0C warmer than they are today (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0921818123000516\">Schwarz et al., 2023<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While scientists have sometimes claimed the higher Pliocene CO2 concentrations (~420 ppm) were at least partly responsible for this warmth, it is well established that CO2 concentration changes&nbsp;<em>follow<\/em>&nbsp;temperature changes by centuries to millennia in paleoclimate reconstructions (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/283\/5408\/1712.short\">F<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/283\/5408\/1712.short\">ischer et al., 1999<\/a><\/strong>;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/291\/5501\/112.short\">Monnin et al., 2001<\/a><\/strong>;&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/299\/5613\/1728.short\">Caillon et al., 2003<\/a><\/strong>;&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/318\/5849\/435.short\">Stott et al., 2007<\/a><\/strong>;&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/moraymo.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2007_kawamuraetal.pdf\">Kawamura et al., 2007<\/a><\/strong>). Since causes cannot lag effects, this largely precludes CO2 as a driving mechanism for ancient temperature fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To further clarify CO2 concentrations are not a climate driver, pollen records in the KPB indicate that even the lowest glacial temperatures and lowest CO2 concentrations (\u201cbelow 200 ppm\u201d) of the Quaternary ice age (last ~2.5 million years) were&nbsp;<em>still<\/em>&nbsp;\u201c~3.5 to 2.5\u2212\u00b0C warmer\u201d than they are with today\u2019s CO2 (~420 ppm) concentrations (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0921818123000516\">Schwarz et al., 2023<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter
