About 9m households had \u201cgreen\u201d energy deals in 2021.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But industry experts say that households are being \u201cduped\u201d into thinking their electricity is clean because&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/bills-and-utilities\/gas-electric\/households-misled-energy-tariffs-pretend-green-says-regulator\/\"><em>suppliers can buy certificates<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;that allow them to market tariffs as sustainable.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Energy suppliers can buy certificates, known as Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin or \u201cRegos\u201d, from green energy generators \u2013 and still provide their own customers with power generated from fossil fuels.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Suppliers are facing increasing pressure to ditch the practice and it is understood that a regulatory review into greenwashing in the sector could be restarted later this year.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Meanwhile, Britain\u2019s major energy companies have spent nearly \u00a32bn on the certificates over the past five years.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Archie Lasseter, the head of sustainability at Utilita, said: \u201cThe problem is industry wide. Almost all suppliers are offering tariffs purporting to be \u2018100pc renewable\u2019 or \u2018zero-carbon\u2019 electricity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cHouseholds on these energy tariffs have been duped into thinking the energy they use is 100pc renewable when it\u2019s not.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable that suppliers have been willing to do it for so long, but even worse, the regulator and the Government have simply watched on and done nothing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Last month Ovo Energy said it would stop buying Regos, because they allow suppliers to \u201cgreenwash\u201d their environmental credentials without boosting the supply of renewable energy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Telegraph Money approached all of the major energy suppliers, but not one would commit to stop the use of Regos.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Regulator Ofgem issues the certificates to energy generators, which can include wind and solar farms, who then sell them on to suppliers, without the green energy created.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In 2019 certificates could be bought for as little as 22p per customer, but the cost has recently&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/04\/06\/net-zero-stung-britain-europes-highest-energy-bills\/\"><em>risen to \u00a35 as energy prices have risen<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;\u2013 making them increasingly unviable for suppliers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/money\/consumer-affairs\/dirty-secret-premium-green-energy-deals\/?fbclid=IwAR02-v5dr7e85nl8kAHrAKDWR6KGrtPAt_Mw-YCCprkgp3kZhbHL-63VJWk\">https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/money\/consumer-affairs\/dirty-secret-premium-green-energy-deals\/?fbclid=IwAR02-v5dr7e85nl8kAHrAKDWR6KGrtPAt_Mw-YCCprkgp3kZhbHL-63VJWk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally I don\u2019t have the slightest sympathy for anybody who has fallen for this scam. In reality, if they want green energy they should be paying the full cost of the subsidies thrown at it, instead of all of us having to pay the
