engulfed by a millennial-scale mega-drought \u2014 is now worried about too much water:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamag.com\/citythinkblog\/megadrought-over-thanks-to-biblical-storms-floods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Mega-Drought Is Over But California Faces a New Threat: Floods<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, because the topic is weather \u2013 which nearly everyone in California thinks equals Climate which equals Climate Change which equals Climate Crisis which equals Climate Catastrophe &nbsp;&nbsp;\u2014 this weather phenomenon&nbsp;<strong>must be a threat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest version of this new threat is \u201cThe Big Melt\u201d \u2013 cheerfully promoted and megaphoned by \u2013 well, nearly every news outlet in California and is echoed in the national press:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>NBCNews: &nbsp;<\/em><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/specials\/the-big-melt-is-here-california-braces-for-floods\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe big melt is now here\u201d: California braces for floods<\/a>\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>USA Today:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/04\/27\/californias-big-melt-begins-heat-cause-flooding-snow-melt\/11736470002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018The Big Melt\u2019: California braces for flooding as heat wave takes aim at state<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Yale Climate Connections: &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2023\/04\/californias-big-melt-kicks-off-likely-to-cause-floods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cCalifornia\u2019s Big Melt kicks off, likely to cause floods\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sky News:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/the-big-melt-crushed-houses-trapped-cars-and-the-threat-of-floods-inside-californias-buried-ski-resort-12867350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe big melt: Crushed houses, trapped cars and the threat of floods\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then, of course, the re-birth of Tulare Lake:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>New York Times:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/03\/us\/california-tulare-lake.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Resurrection of Tulare Lake\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>California Local:\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/californialocal.com\/localnews\/statewide\/ca\/article\/show\/32646-lake-tulare-flooding-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cDestruction or Reclamation? Whitney to Lone Pine. [ Using&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/explore\/recording\/pacific-crest-trail-ca-section-h--4\" target=\"_blank\">this route<\/a>&nbsp;]&nbsp;&nbsp; The Yosemite Valley meadows which are covered with campgrounds and tourists in season are still wild and beautiful.&nbsp; But with the spring come floods and the California press was awash with news that&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2023\/04\/25\/yosemite-valley-to-close-due-to-flood-risk-from-melting-sierra-snowpack\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201c<strong>Most of Yosemite Valley will close starting Friday, April 28, at 10 pm, due to a forecast of flooding.\u201d<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Flooding in the spring is perfectly normal for Yosemite Valley in the spring.&nbsp;And is fully expected, every single year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How long has this been happening?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since forever.&nbsp;&nbsp; But one of the best description of this magnificent natural phenomenon was written by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Muir\" target=\"_blank\">John Muir<\/a>&nbsp;himself \u2013 about the flood of December 1871, and was originally published in the June 1875 issue of&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overland_Monthly\" target=\"_blank\">The Overland Monthly<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;and substantially revised as Chapter XI, \u201cThe River Floods,\u201d in&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/10012\/10012-h\/10012-h.htm#chap11\" target=\"_blank\">The Mountains of California<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(1894).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full original story (which is much better than the revised version published in&nbsp;<em>The Mountains of California<\/em>) can be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/storyoftheweek.loa.org\/2021\/11\/yosemite-valley-in-flood.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read here<\/a>, supplied by the<a href=\"https:\/\/loa.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Library of America<\/a>.
