All paid staff are out of a job by mid-May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its volunteers \u2014 for some years an army of 300 \u2014 have spent the past decade inveigling citizens to Tupperware-style home parties where \u201cFacilitators\u201d show scary climate videos and steer invitees towards climate activism.<a href=\"https:\/\/quadrant.org.au\/opinion\/doomed-planet\/2023\/04\/dead-wrong-fanatical-and-fully-funded\/#_edn1\">[1]<\/a>&nbsp;It\u2019s poetic that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/10\/investing\/tupperware-trouble\/index.html\">Tupperware itself has reached its use-by date.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate for Change was the brainchild of Katerina Gaita, daughter of Melbourne University philosopher&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raimond_Gaita\">Raymond Gaita<\/a>. She\u2019s a case study in savvy activism transforming the community with intricate and effective webs of influence. Young Katerina departed the leafy piles of Gardenvale to dwell amid the polyglot tribes of Footscray, Seddon and Kingsville in Melbourne\u2019s west.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thewestsider.com.au\/katerina-gaita-climate-change-activist-and-community-builder\/\">She has confessed<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In 2007, after reading the book Climate Code Red, it hit me like a ton of bricks. For six months, I was just incapacitated. I walked down the street crying, not knowing what to do.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Al Gore trainee\/disciple, she elaborated to the ABC on her round-the-clock meltdown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I remember waking up in the middle of the night and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-11-07\/climate-change-activists-organise-dinners-to-save-the-planet\/7992282\">finding my cheeks were wet<\/a>, I guess it is the same as any grief; there\u2019s a strange loneliness that comes from being amongst other people who aren\u2019t feeling the same grief that you are.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For consolation, she should get together with the ANU\u2019s IPCC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/quadrant.org.au\/opinion\/doomed-planet\/2022\/10\/the-very-model-of-a-modern-climateer\/\">lachrymose<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/quadrant.org.au\/opinion\/doomed-planet\/2019\/03\/quizzing-our-queen-of-catastrophism\/\">lead-author<\/a>&nbsp;Dr Joelle Gergis. As far as green tears go, it would be Victoria Falls meets Niagara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com.au\/Climate-Code-Red-emergency-action-ebook\/dp\/B006DOCX7U\/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1PB1SG3C9IY03&amp;keywords=climate+code+red&amp;qid=1682400422&amp;sprefix=climate+code+red%2Caps%2C272&amp;sr=8-2\">Climate Code Red<\/a>&nbsp;was co-authored in 2008 by David Spratt and Philip Sutton. I tangled politely with David a decade ago when he was urging us at a Moonee Valley Council talk to tip out the state\u2019s sort-of-conservative Premier Denis Napthine \u2014 odd since councils are meant to be non-partisan (see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/quadrant.org.au\/opinion\/tony-thomas\/2014\/08\/ratepayers-ratbaggery\/\">Ratepayers &amp; Ratbaggery)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-11-07\/climate-change-activists-organise-dinners-to-save-the-planet\/7992282\">BC chronicled<\/a>&nbsp;Katarina\u2019s \u201cmany approaches to tackling climate change, from living green herself, to running a green cleaning business and teaching people how to clean green.\u201d She came to see that electoral work was more powerful, serving as the CEO of C4C from 2014-21 before&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/au.linkedin.com\/in\/katerina-gaita\">segueing into canvassing<\/a>&nbsp;to get the Liberal\u2019s Tim Wilson ejected from his Melbourne seat of Goldstein at last year\u2019s federal election. She coordinated the search by \u201cVoices of Goldstein\u201d for a rival candidate. With the ex-ABC\u2019s Zoe Daniels in the bag, Katerina helped run 1400 volunteers. They knocked on 44,000 local doors over ten weeks, evaporating Tim Wilson\u2019s 7.8% margin via a 3% swing to Labor and getting Daniels elected as a Teal independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katerina is now membership developer for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aegn.org.au\/\">Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network (AEGN)<\/a>. Chief among its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aegn.org.au\/about-us\/#resourcing-our-work\">backers<\/a>&nbsp;are Computershare founder&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.morrisgroup.com.au\/how-we-work\/\">Chris Morris<\/a>, rich-listed in March at $1.2 billion, and his daughter, Hayley.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aegn.org.au\/board-member\/simon-holmes-a-court\/\">On its board<\/a>&nbsp;is the Teals\u2019 funding svengali Simon Holmes a Court, who mobilised $13 million for their campaigns. Another supporter is omnipresent multi-millionaire Robert Purves and his Purves Environmental Fund. AEGN itself acts as a catalyst among funders, itself running on a budget of only $1.4m, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acnc.gov.au\/charity\/charities\/dd6a68b9-38af-e811-a95e-000d3ad24c60\/documents\/f0899301-9b81-ed11-81ad-000d3ad1400f\">mere five FTE staff<\/a>&nbsp;and half a dozen volunteers. AEGN\u2019s Vision includes stopping new and existing fossil fuel projects in favour of \u201cclean renewable energy\u201d. How will the lights&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.com.au\/2023\/04\/the-endless-wind-drought-crippling-renewables\/\">stay on during wind droughts<\/a>? Don\u2019t you worry about that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll get back to the above-mentioned&nbsp;<em>Climate Code Red<\/em>&nbsp;book after some more on Brunswick-based Climate for Change, of which, as it happens, I am a proud member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since inception, C4C\u2019s paid staff have see-sawed between one and seven full-time equivalents. Volunteers were close to 300 a year from 2018-21, tumbling to 20 last year. During eight years it raised a handsome $1.04m in funding drives, $740,000 in donations &nbsp;and received $370,000 &nbsp;in grants (does that mean from taxpayers?), in a total income of about $2.7m. Sadly, it blew its dough on staff in the past three years, racking up $123,000 in losses and reducing net assets to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/acncpubfilesprodstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/public\/596d844f-3aaf-e811-a960-000d3ad24282-8896243c-cacc-4c53-bec3-ce8a5317701f-Financial%20Report-8c1cf1f3-d5ac-ed11-83ff-000d3ad0b1e9-C4C_Financial_Statements.pdf\">a meagre $71,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Co-CEOs Jane Stabb \u2014 pronouns: she\/her \u2014 of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateforchange.org.au\/staff\">Naarm<\/a>&nbsp;(once known as \u201cMelbourne\u201d) and Lena Herrera Piekarski \u2014 she\/her \u2014 of Kulin country\u2019s Wurundjeri and Woiwurrung, informed me sadly but \u201cwith warmth and gratitude\u201d that as a small organisation C4C had been directly hit by \u201cthe current economic crisis and inflation\u201d. (That\u2019s a Labor Treasurer for you). So, they continue, they had to make the hard decision to axe all permanent staff, including themselves, and continue their \u201camazing work\u201d with an all-volunteer cast and board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateforchange.org.au\/our_impact\">demographics of C4C<\/a>&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 Main income over the years came from annual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommunity.com.au\/general\/general_article.jsp?articleid=7839\">six-figure crowd-funding<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 It has trained more than 460 Facilitators<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 Staff costs per trained Facilitator were from $500-1000; with $50-100 staff cost per attendee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 Something over<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateforchange.org.au\/about\">&nbsp;11,500 hosted attendees<\/a>&nbsp;by now in Victoria and Qld. Most were female (65%) and betweeen18 and 35 years of age. About 60% were parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666&nbsp;Attendees who \u201cstrongly agreed\u201d to vote for climate candidates doubled from 40% to 80% after the Conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 During the 2019 federal election, nearly 40% of attendees went on to help Australian Conservation Foundation with its green electioneering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;<\/em>\u2666 Melbourne work was concentrated in the often-dubbed People\u2019s Republics around Brunswick\/Northcote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 \u201cWithout any targeted campaign from C4C, Facilitators responded to a high demand for Conversations in and around the Brunswick electorate in 2018. In the 11 months leading up to the [2018 State] election, 55 Conversations were held there reaching more than 480 people. In the seat of Brunswick there was a 2.7% swing to the candidate with the strongest climate policies. The candidate won the seat by a margin of just over 500 votes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 Nearly half attendees of one Facilitator increased their pestering of MPs. One young woman was quoted,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI\u2019m going to get in touch with my MP and I\u2019m going to get my whole family to do it too.\u201d And there were tears in her eyes as she said this, but there was steel in her voice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 As an attendee told C4C: \u201cI feel more confident taking action and calling out climate denialists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666&nbsp;At least one attendee \u2013 a business man \u2013 &nbsp;turned vegan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;I\u2019ve been inspired as C4C supporter to host a \u201cClimate C.A.F.E. \u2018Climate Action For Everyone\u2019 session!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m assured my event will \u201ccreate real change on the systems we live in\u201d.&nbsp;I\u2019m to invite my trusting but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateforchange.org.au\/climate_conversations\">\u201cconfused and overwhelmed\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;friends. I provide the party pies and booze, C4C sends along their climate salesperson. I\u2019m to invent a tale about what inspired me to seek destruction of Australia\u2019s electricity system \u2013 people are swayed not by facts but by heart-warming stories, C4C says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For CAF\u00c9 homework, I\u2019ve downloaded C4C\u2019s 10-page&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateforchange.org.au\/download_guide\">\u201cConversation Guide\u201d<\/a>, which coaches me \u201cto help stop climate change\u201d. I\u2019m warned that \u201cpressuring people into actions they\u2019re not ready for can backfire.\u201d Like all good salespeople, I qualify my audience as alarmed, alert, concerned, cautious or whatever, tailoring C4C\u2019s scripts for each. If someone\u2019s \u201cdisengaged\u201d, I should say, \u201cI\u2019ve read about what will happen to the cost of living if this drought continues\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drought, what drought?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C4C writes, \u201cWhat if my conversation is with someone who denies climate change is real, or who becomes angry?\u201d I mustn\u2019t waste my time and emotional energy on those creatures, \u201cwho could make you feel awful and send you backwards in your relationships\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of my C4C education about First Nations cultures, I\u2019m also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1IQR5K5nQ9AzowfoGxYmUHjACtEK3Y32jlk2d7eJ2kh0\">encouraged by C4C to swot up<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/quadrant.org.au\/opinion\/qed\/2023\/04\/bruce-pascoe-very-much-in-the-black\/\">Bruce Pascoe\u2019s \u201cimpeccable\u201d&nbsp;<em>Dark Emu<\/em>&nbsp;pre-histor<\/a>y, and I can \u201cLearn to write an Acknowledgement of Country. (Cost included).\u201d Sounds fun.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What of the&nbsp;<em>Climate Code Red<\/em>&nbsp;book that jellified poor Katerina Gaita?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It references what the official climate crowd was predicting in 2008, and every single proposition, with 2023 hindsight, has proven wrong, stupid and ridiculous. The equivalent climate crowd today, from the IPCC down, is making the same predictions of catastrophes (e.g.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/11\/7\/world-on-highway-to-climate-hell-un-chief-guterres-tells-cop27#:~:text=\">UN Secretary-General Guterres:<\/a>&nbsp; \u201cWe are on a highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator.\u201d). You can safely bet your children\u2019s lives that by 2033, today\u2019s predictions will turn out equally wrong, stupid and ridiculous. But, meanwhile, Australian governments, state and federal, are vandalising the electricity grid and turning us into political and economic satraps of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-15\/china-climate-advisers-say-more-coal-needed-for-energy-security?mc_cid=12cc13de89&amp;mc_eid=260f164f84&amp;leadSource=uverify%20wall\">energy-rich China<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2008 book cited Spratt as community campaigner for the \u201cpeace movement\u201d (unlike the rest of us who support the war movement). He wanted each of us to get a personal CO2 ration, involving surveillance and controls that would make Stalin, the Stasi and Xi Jin-Ping look moderate. Family carbon rationing would \u201cguarantee that the national greenhouse emissions budget is achieved\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAn authority independent of government , like the Reserve Bank , would set up a national greenhouse \u2013 emissions budget each year . The amount of emissions would be decreased each year , through a series of downward steps to zero , in accordance with a rapid transition plan .&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Because households in Australia are directly responsible for about one \u2013 quarter of emissions ( generated principally by household energy use and private travel ) , one \u2013 quarter of the carbon budget would be made available free of charge to each citizen as an equal \u2018 carbon credit \u2019 ( or ration ) , via an electronic swipe \u2018 carbon card \u2019 . The card would be used to draw on an individual carbon \u2013 credit balance each time household gas and electricity , petrol , and air tickets were paid for \u2026 If a person lacked the greenhouse \u2013 emissions credits to cover a purchase they could buy credit at the point of sale.\u201d<\/em>(p244-5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My personal view of Spratt\u2019s plan aligns with Orwell\u2019s in his&nbsp;<em>1984<\/em>: \u201cAlways, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face\u2014 forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clearly the book was a game-changer in its day. Other lady law graduates like Katerina must have staggered down working-class streets for six months in tearful incapacitation after reaching page 14 about Arctic ice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In 2006 , former Australian of the Year , palaeontologist , and climate \u2013 change activist Tim Flannery suggested that \u2018at the trajectory set by the new rate of melt , however , there will be no Arctic icecap in the next five to fifteen years.\u2019&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Flannery\u2019s forecast for 2011-21 the sea-ice up there now would barely chill a can of Fanta. (201). Huh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 A \u201cpeak oil\u201d crisis was imminent, with a Queensland government task force\u2019s report finding \u201coverwhelming evidence\u201d that oil output would reach an \u201cabsolute peak\u201d before 2017.
