One person was killed and four taken to hospital after a busy multi-storey car park in New York City collapsed on Tuesday.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aerial footage showed cars piled on top of another in a jumble of cracked concrete as one official described how the Lower Manhattan building “pancaked all the way to the cellar floor”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kazimir Vilenchik, the acting head of New York\u2019s buildings department, said further collapses were feared following the incident on Ann Street. The cause of the collapse is not yet known<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was only last week that the Telegraph<\/a> reported experts\u2019 warnings that multi-storey car parks across the country could be at risk of collapse as heavier electric vehicles put pressure on ageing infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cause of this New York collapse is of course unknown at the moment, but clearly there was an issue with the amount of weight being carried by the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extra weight of EVs will inevitably push many of these older car parks into the danger zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
