(Photo by English Heritage\/Heritage Images\/Getty Images)<small>GETTY IMAGES<\/small><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his bestseller book on the medieval mind, \u201cin a world lit only by fire\u201d, historian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/World-Lit-Only-Fire\/dp\/0316545562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">William Manchester<\/a>&nbsp;draws his portrait of the Dark Ages (roughly during 400 &#8211; 1400 AD after the collapse of the Western Roman empire and before the Renaissance). He describes it as \u201ca melange of incessant warfare, corruption, lawlessness, obsession with strange myths and an almost impenetrable mindlessness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not a stretch of the imagination to see the remarkable parallels between our own \u201cscientific age\u201d and that of Europe\u2019s Dark Ages. The \u201cincessant warfare\u201d of medieval Europe is now played out in the troubled Middle East since 9\/11 (2001) and above all, in Europe itself as NATO and Russia lock horns in Ukraine. The corruption of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/371\/bmj.m4425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific research<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thenewamericanist.com\/victor-davis-hanson-how-corrupt-is-a-corrupt-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">media<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aier.org\/article\/new-leak-of-taxpayer-info-is-more-evidence-of-irs-corruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">political institutions<\/a>\u00a0in the West is rife. Our lawlessness today is vividly exhibited in the chyron of a TV reporter in the mainstream media\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/the-solzhenitsyn-quote-that-explains-the-mostly-peaceful-violence-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describing<\/a>\u00a0\u201cfiery but mostly peaceful protests after police shooting\u201d with burning city buildings in the background which marked 120 days of riot, death, arson and looting in the summer of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Signs of The New Dark Age: What have we come to?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One does not have to look far to find the Dark Ages\u2019 \u201cimpenetrable mindlessness\u201d in modern times: a nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/24\/supreme-court-nominee-judge-ketanji-brown-wont-define-woman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could not define<\/a>\u00a0what a woman is at a Senate hearing because she is \u201cnot a biologist\u201d. The most peculiar of our \u201cobsession with strange myths\u201d is the believe in the \u201cclimate emergency\u201d, aptly described by the eminent physicist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/co2coalition.org\/media\/the-absurdity-of-the-conventional-global-warming-narrative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richard Lindzen<\/a>\u00a0as the \u201cabsurdity of the conventional global warming narrative\u201d. Even as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.org\/policy-study\/decline-deaths-extreme-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deaths from extreme weather events<\/a>\u00a0have been reduced by 98% over the past century, the West\u2019s obsession at reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions at any cost is one that might be easily compared to the medieval Church\u2019s practice of selling indulgences. This was a writ issued by the Church for money in return for the remission of sin and a place in heaven. From issues related to energy and the environment and to race and gender, \u201ca new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/listverse.com\/2020\/05\/26\/top-10-signs-we-are-entering-a-new-dark-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">theology<\/a>\u00a0is being formed and questioning it is tantamount to heresy with shaming and ostracism becoming the new burning at the stake\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The modern dark age we are living in can be encapsulated by an energy-rationing top Green Party official in Germany&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/summit.news\/2022\/08\/23\/green-party-official-tells-germans-to-use-washcloths-instead-of-taking-showers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who told constituents<\/a>&nbsp;to use washcloths instead of taking showers as the country faced a natural gas supply crunch after imposing sanctions on Russia. Another sign of the modern dark age was provided by the head of Britain&#8217;s electricity and gas systems&#8217; operator who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/prepare-for-blackouts-on-cold-weekday-evenings-national-grid-chief-warns-12723349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told households this winter<\/a>&nbsp;to prepare for blackouts between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays during &#8220;really, really cold&#8221; days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet another indicator of our modern dark age is when Texas had a cold snap and hundreds of people died with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tilakdoshi\/2021\/03\/04\/the-texas-catastrophic-blackout-lessons-for-the-developing-countries\/?sh=1bab64346481\">power blackouts<\/a>\u00a0in February 2021. The lack of investments in dispatchable power sector fuelled by coal, natural gas and nuclear generation over the past two decades meant that reliable power from these sources was sacrificed at the altar of the Green gods in favour of wind and solar power. Wind turbines and solar panels are our new guides to sinless power consumption. These \u201crenewable\u201d technologies promptly went\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/texas-blackouts-why-happened-truth-chuck-devore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">out of commission<\/a>\u00a0when the sudden cold weather stopped the wind turbines and solar farms from providing their fickle power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since nothing sells like fear, the high church priests of Climate Alarm Central, the UN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/intergovernmental-panel-climate-change-ipcc-un-united-nations-global-warming-floods-wildfire-stevens-palmer-koonin-11628631428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highly politicized<\/a>\u00a0\u201cSummary Report for Policymakers\u201d (based on work done by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s (IPCC)),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2023\/03\/20\/press-release-ar6-synthesis-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a>\u00a0us last month that \u201curgent climate action can secure a liveable future for all.\u201d UN chief Antonio Guterres is not one to shy away from cranking up the needle on the climate alarm meter. At last year\u2019s UN annual climate jamboree held in Egypt, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/nov\/07\/cop27-climate-summit-un-secretary-general-antonio-guterres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thundered<\/a>\u00a0that humanity is on a \u201chighway to climate hell\u201d, saying the fight for a liveable planet will be won or lost \u201cthis decade\u201d. On the publication of the IPCC\u2019s \u201clandmark report\u201d in August 2021, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/science-health_un-chief-climate-change-report-code-red-humanity\/6209343.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cits code red for humanity. The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable\u201d, a pronouncement\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/video\/2021\/sep\/07\/this-is-code-red-biden-sounds-alarm-on-climate-crisis-as-he-tours-new-york-damage-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeated<\/a>\u00a0by U.S. president Joe Biden. In his latest iteration last month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2023-03-20\/un-climate-report-gives-stark-warning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mr. Guterres said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cHumanity is on thin ice \u2014 and that ice is melting fast\u2026Our world needs climate action on all fronts \u2014 everything, everywhere, all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the alchemy, amulets and talismans of Europe\u2019s Dark Ages, our favourite instruments these days are the \u201ctuned\u201d mathematical models simulating the climate \u2013 what physicist Steve Koonin calls the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Unsettled-Climate-Science-Doesnt-Matters\/dp\/1950665798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many, muddled models<\/a>\u201d \u2014 and predicting the climate 50 to 100 years out with a certainty that defies common sense. Perhaps\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/3915-common-sense-is-not-so-common\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voltaire<\/a>\u00a0gets the last laugh in reminding us that \u201ccommon sense is not so common\u201d. Meanwhile, our humdrum meteorological models of the weathermen can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2019-04-limit-scientists-bounds-weather.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hardly predict<\/a>\u00a0the weather more than 10 days out. Like Middle Ages Europe, apocalypticism or the religious belief that the end of the world is imminent requires an Al Gore in our lives today. Unlike divining the Bible, his job is simpler, writing the equation \u201cmore CO<sub>2\u00a0<\/sub>equals dangerous global warming\u201d and showing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investors.com\/politics\/editorials\/al-gore-runs-global-warming-racket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misleading documentary<\/a>\u00a0proving so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Glimmers of Light\u2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some recent news headlines give hope. Like the early shoots of the Renaissance spring that began to emerge in 15<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century Europe, the modern Western barbarism of an enforced energy starvation diet is being exposed and increasingly challenged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/03\/29\/electric-vehicle-backdown-means-eu-net-zero-plan-in-tatters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(Ross Clark): \u201cThe EU&#8217;s Net Zero plan is in tatters &#8211; and not a moment too soon\u201d (29 March 2023)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/berlin-votes-tighter-climate-goals-test-germans-commitment-change-2023-03-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Reuters<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(Riham Alkousaa): \u201cBerliners vote down referendum on tighter climate goals\u201d (26 March 2023)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/dutch-farmers-party-bbb-mark-rutte-netherlands-big-winner-in-provincial-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Politico<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>(Nicolas Camut): \u201cDutch pro-farmers party wins big in provincial elections\u201d (16 March 2023)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/cars\/1752831\/petrol-diesel-car-ban-poll-result-spt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Express<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(Natalie Crookham): \u201cStaggering poll shows 93 percent oppose 2030 petrol and diesel car ban [UK]\u201d (30 March 2023)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The editors of one leading paper&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/europe-backtracks-on-its-gas-car-ban-internal-combustion-engines-2035-european-union-7d67cbc2?mod=e2two&amp;mc_cid=10bc96fb3e&amp;mc_eid=7018c97af7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">put it like this<\/a>: \u201cThe implausibility of a net-zero carbon energy future is becoming so obvious that even Europeans are starting to notice.\u201d The shock news of Germany\u2019s decision to block the EU-wide agreement on the combustion engine ban by 2035 is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/mar\/23\/german-government-in-crisis-over-eu-ban-on-car-combustion-engines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatening<\/a>&nbsp;to unravel Germany\u2019s three-party governing alliance, after the Green party accused its liberal coalition partners of gambling away the country\u2019s [green] reputation\u2026\u201d The German government wants to replace this ban and permit combustion engine cars running on synthetic \u201ce-fuels\u201d. E-fuels are yet another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com\/2023\/03\/24\/germany-rebels-against-eu-ban-on-petrol-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unproven technology<\/a>&nbsp;but, if somehow viable in the future, would at least preserve the country\u2019s vaunted position in automobile combustion engines. That Western Europe\u2019s reigning green ideologues could be blocked by the German car manufacturers\u2019 lobby \u2013 one of the country\u2019s industrial pillars and a major employer \u2013 seems to signal the victory of economic rationality over climate ideology in this instance at least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country\u2019s green advocates received further bad news as voters in the Berlin referendum for a climate-neutral city by 2030 failed resoundingly as \u201cyes\u201d votes failed to achieve the 25% quorum of all eligible voters needed to make the referendum valid. According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climatechangedispatch.com\/berlins-climate-neutral-by-2030-referendum-fails-spectacularly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">critics<\/a>&nbsp;interviewed by&nbsp;<em>Bild<\/em>, the radical climate project pushed in the referendum is \u201cfactually impossible\u201d and \u201cout of the question\u201d, noting that \u201ceven the original 2045 target timetable [is] almost impossible to meet.\u201d Even Berlin\u2019s uber-green elites could not swing the vote against the average city-dweller sick of hot water rationing, dimmed street lights at night and shuttered swimming pools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, in a parallel development, Italy\u2019s new conservative government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/italy-looks-slow-green-transition-drive-shield-local-firms-2023-03-27\/?mc_cid=10bc96fb3e&amp;mc_eid=7018c97af7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a>&nbsp;that the EU water down a directive aimed at improving the energy efficiency of buildings, re-write plans to phase out combustion engine cars and questioned a drive to slash industrial emissions. In a bid to save Italian industry from the ravages of the EU\u2019s \u201cenergy transition\u201d plans, the country\u2019s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/italy-looks-slow-green-transition-drive-shield-local-firms-2023-03-27\/?mc_cid=10bc96fb3e&amp;mc_eid=7018c97af7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;those attending a Brussels summit that &#8220;The problem is that we cannot help the environment by destroying our industries.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An equally seismic event occurred in the Netherlands where a political party&nbsp;<em>BoerBurgerBeweging<\/em>&nbsp;(BBB) achieved a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/03\/16\/dutch-farmer-protests-emissions-regulations-lead-to-rise-of-new-political-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">major victory<\/a>&nbsp;in provincial elections on 15 March. It finished ahead of Prime Minister Mark Rutte&#8217;s People&#8217;s Party for Freedom and Democracy in the Senate. The Dutch government has plans to reduce nitrogen emissions by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/sep\/09\/netherlands-proposes-radical-plans-to-cut-livestock-numbers-by-almost-a-third\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massively cutting<\/a>&nbsp;livestock farming and buying up thousands of farms. The country is the world\u2019s second largest food exporter with an industry&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dutchreview.com\/culture\/innovation\/second-largest-agriculture-exporter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worth<\/a>&nbsp;over $100 billion last year. Green activists have targeted food production on the basis that nitrogen fertilizers emit nitrous oxide (N<sub>2<\/sub>O), a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. The BBB victory calls into question the government\u2019s ability to continue its extremist climate policies at the expense of its farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether these glimmers of light in the West\u2019s dark age today are real indicators of an emerging rationality or merely the dying throes of those who are fighting an invincible \u201cgreen\u201d juggernaut that will crush industry and people\u2019s livelihoods, only time will tell.
