Exclusive: UAE\u2019s fossil fuel boss will be the president of Cop28, making a mockery of the summit, say campaigners<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Arab Emirates<\/a>, which is hosting this year\u2019s UN climate summit, has the third biggest net zero-busting plans for oil and gas expansion in the world, the Guardian can reveal. Its plans are surpassed only by Saudi Arabia and Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CEO of the UAE\u2019s national oil company, Adnoc, has been controversially appointed president of the UN\u2019s Cop28 summit in December, which is seen as crucial with time running out<\/a> to end the climate crisis. But Sultan Al Jaber is overseeing expansion to produce oil and gas equivalent to 7.5bn barrels of oil, according to new data, 90% of which would have to remain in the ground to meet the net zero scenario set out by the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adnoc is the world\u2019s 11th biggest oil and gas producer and delivered more than a billion barrels of oil equivalent (BBOE) in 2021. However, the company has big short-term expansion plans, the new analysis shows, with plans to add 7.6 BBOE to its production portfolio in the coming years \u2013 the fifth largest increase in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will delegates be handed a petroleum product price list and a phone number on arrival, so they can place their orders before joining the party?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it will be a spectacular party. The UAE might be a union of strict Islamic emirates, but the emirates also respect and abide by Islamic traditions of hospitality. Alcohol is only forbidden for Muslims, except in really strict emirates like\u00a0Sharjah<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If their COP28 guests want alcohol and a bit of fun, the Abu Dhabi and Dubai emirates at least will do their best to accommodate them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
