Back-up power generators have started to arrive in Ireland to help it keep the lights on during the next few winters,\u00a0reports The Telegraph<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mobile turbines, described as \u201ceffectively jet engines\u201d, are set to be installed in areas including Dublin and nearby County Meath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u20ac350m (\u00a3308m) temporary capacity was ordered by environment minister Eamon Ryan last year as a \u201clast resort\u201d, after regulators flagged a looming shortfall in generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is an electricity emergency,\u201d minister of state Ossian Smyth told its parliament in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a national scandal,\u201d retorted Darren O\u2019Rourke, the Teachta D\u00e1la for Meath East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fears of blackouts across Europe and the UK this winter \u2013 first sparked by market turmoil linked to Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine \u2013 have started to recede as spring looms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet concerns about the future remain: in Ireland, surging demand for electricity and the closure of ageing gas-fired power stations have left the country vulnerable next winter and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics have also warned that Ireland is becoming too reliant on imports of gas, as domestic fossil fuel generation is sidelined in pursuit of green goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
