And when we say energy, we mean power, delivered safely, reliably and affordably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nuclear power ticks all those boxes, but building latest generation 1,000+MW plants can seemingly take forever, thanks to a raft of impenetrable regulatory hurdles thrown up by governments pandering to anti-nuke, green-activists and, these days, renewable energy rent seekers, terrified by the existential threat nuclear power poses to the great wind and solar scam. Why let your competitor have a free run, if you can wreck his chances, from the get go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invention and innovation aren\u2019t usually far behind necessity and, in an energy-starved world, the necessity of having power, as and when we need it, has never been clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which brings us to floating nuclear power plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They been around since the late 60s, when the US military built the \u2018Sturgis\u2019 \u2013 a nuclear barge \u2013 and docked it in Panama in 1968, where it supplied 10MW of power to the Canal Zone until 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Russians have built several floating nuclear power plants, over the years. Rosatom launched the Akademik Lomonosov, in September 2019; it\u2019s now reliably supplying 70 MW of power to remote and snowbound Pevek, off the coast of Chukotka in Russia\u2019s far North-East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Robert Bryce details below, Samsung Heavy Industries and Denmark\u2019s Seaborg Technologies are set to upscale on the Russian\u2019s achievements, both of them are working on plans for floating Molten Salt Reactors with 800MW capacities, promising to bring fast relief to our renewables-driven&nbsp;energy disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why Shipyards May Be The Future of Fission<\/strong><br>Substack<br>Robert Bryce<br>21 January 2021<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest challenge facing the future of the global nuclear sector can be summed up in one word: scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s no doubt that we are seeing a new paradigm for nuclear energy. The surging interest in the technology is due to many factors, including Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, climate change, and the global energy crisis. And the announcements over the past few weeks \u2014 from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/South-Korea-Bets-Big-On-Nuclear-Energy-At-The-Expense-Of-Renewables.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Korea<\/a>, Japan, Sweden,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.enerdata.net\/publications\/daily-energy-news\/indonesia-plans-build-nuclear-power-plant-2039.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indonesia<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/estonianworld.com\/technology\/estonia-joins-a-us-nuclear-programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Estonia<\/a>, are indicative of this resurgence. But the main problem facing the global industry is that new reactors take far too long to build and deploy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For proof of that, you need only look at two reactors being built at Southern Company\u2019s Plant Vogtle. Construction on the Unit 3 reactor began in 2009. That&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/company\/plant-vogtle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,100-megawatt reactor<\/a>&nbsp;is expected to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southerncompany.com\/innovation\/vogtle-3-and-4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finally begin pumping juice into the grid in April<\/a>, roughly 14 years after construction began. Or consider Finland\u2019s Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor, which began construction in 2005. That project, which uses the European Pressurized Reactor, incurred numerous delays and finally&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olkiluoto_Nuclear_Power_Plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">began producing power in 2022<\/a>, about 17 years after construction began. (That 1,600-megawatt reactor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/finlands-ol3-nuclear-reactor-faces-new-delay-blow-power-supply-2022-12-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is still having problems<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put short, we just aren\u2019t building new reactors fast enough to make even a small dent in global greenhouse gas emissions, which continue to rise. Indeed,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/analysis-global-co2-emissions-from-fossil-fuels-hit-record-high-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they rose by about 1% last year to a new record high of 36.6 gigatons<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why the recent announcement by Samsung Heavy Industries and Denmark\u2019s Seaborg Technologies about a new nuclear powership is a potential game changer. The companies announced they have completed designs for a nuclear power ship using compact molten salt reactors that could produce up to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/maritime-executive.com\/article\/samsung-completes-conceptual-design-of-molten-salt-nuclear-power-barge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">800 megawatts of power<\/a>. They also said they are aiming for commercialization by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shipyards have the production capacity \u2013 including their own steel mills and armies of welders \u2013 to churn out reactor vessels at the scale needed to make a difference in the global electricity mix. If shipyards could begin churning out these ships at scale, they could be deployed to electricity-starved nations throughout Asia and Africa. They could be towed to those locations, anchored in a convenient spot in the harbor, and plugged into existing power grids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, I saw power ships in action in Lebanon, a country that has been plagued by electricity shortages for years. We shot a segment for our documentary,&nbsp;<em>Juice: How Electricity Explains the World,<\/em>&nbsp;(check it out,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oYMXNn56kTo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it\u2019s now available free on YouTube in some countries<\/a>), in Jounieh, a small port town north of Beirut, where the Turkish firm, Karpowership, was operating a vessel that was providing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/desktop.beiruting.com\/LeMag\/Karadeniz_Powership_FATMAG%C3%9CL_SULTAN_arrives_to_Lebanon_\/794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 200 megawatts of generation capacity to the Lebanese grid<\/a>. But that powership, and another one that was docked south of Beirut, burned heavy fuel oil and were extremely polluting. Karpowership is one of the world\u2019s largest powership operators and has deployed its vessels in numerous countries,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.powermag.com\/the-470-mw-floating-powership-that-buoyed-ghana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including Ghana<\/a>, Indonesia, and Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be clear, nuclear powerships are not a new idea.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usace.army.mil\/Media\/Images\/igphoto\/2001874451\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In 1968, the US military deployed the MH-1A Sturgis Nuclear Barge in Panama<\/a>. It was docked in Gatun Lake and provided about 10 megawatts of power to the Canal Zone until it was unplugged in 1976. In 2019, Rosatom deployed a nuclear powership in the Siberian city of Pevek. That vessel, the Akademic Lomonosov, has an electric power capacity of 70 megawatts. In 2020, Kirsty Gogan and Eric Ingersoll, the co-founders of the non-profit group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terrapraxis.org\/about\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TerraPraxis<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/85583087-f90f-41ea-bc21-bf855ee12b35.filesusr.com\/ugd\/2fed7a_8c674cee51eb41aa8dc271ddfc0d9954.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued a report that charted a commercialization pathway<\/a>&nbsp;that would utilize the world\u2019s biggest ship-building countries, Japan, South Korea, and China, to fabricate dozens of nuclear reactors and the ships that would hold them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, Gogan, Ingersoll, and Rauli Partinen expanded on the potential of shipyard-based fabrication&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/journal\/no-18-fall-2022\/the-future-of-nuclear-at-sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in an article published by the Breakthrough Institute<\/a>. They wrote, \u201cMarine nuclear, after all, is really nothing new. Hundreds of small marine reactors have been built and operated in the last 70 years, albeit mainly for military vessels. No doubt there are issues to be resolved in licensing, operating, and proving the safety case for commercial plants. And for international commercial applications, global maritime regulation and trade regimes would need to get up to speed. But, at least according to the 2022 IAEA book on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/iaea-publishes-free-e-book-on-nuclear-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nuclear Law<\/a>, the legal infrastructure is at least in place for pilot projects. And these pilot projects themselves would have a substantial technical history of maritime nuclear to start from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are right. Many issues have to be resolved before nuclear powerships can be scaled up, including regulatory matters. But the nuclear sector badly needs momentum. It needs to build lots of reactors, quickly.
