Millions of years of volcanic activity in the area have created rich soils ideal for this kind of free-range, grass-fed farming, helping turn dairy cows into the country\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi.govt.nz\/export\/food\/dairy\/?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template\">&nbsp;biggest export earners<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the digestive processes of the livestock \u2014 basically, their burps \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-solutions\/2020\/11\/27\/climate-solutions-seaweed-methane\/?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emit a powerful greenhouse gas called methane<\/a>, and as a result, agriculture&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.govt.nz\/publications\/aotearoa-new-zealands-first-emissions-reduction-plan\/agriculture\/?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template#:~:text=The%20agriculture%20sector%20contributes%2050,methane%20emissions%20are%20from%20agriculture.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">makes up half<\/a>&nbsp;of the country\u2019s emissions. Now, the island nation, dubbed the Saudi Arabia of milk for its dominant role in global dairy trade, faces a reckoning over how to balance the outsize contribution that ranchers make to the economy against New Zealand\u2019s need to meet its<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.govt.nz\/what-government-is-doing\/areas-of-work\/climate-change\/emissions-reduction-targets\/greenhouse-gas-emissions-targets-and-reporting\/?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template\">&nbsp;greenhouse gas<\/a>&nbsp;pledges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some farmers will need to reduce their herds to meet those targets<\/strong>, which many worry could drive them out of business.
