This map is from Nadine May\u2019s thesis,\u201d the Twitter user tweeted on Dec. 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuch an obvious move!\u201d Musk commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then the CEO of Tesla added that: \u201cEven solar plus batteries on a small section of Spain would solve EU energy needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/technology\/elon-musk-has-original-idea-to-solve-the-energy-crisis-in-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/technology\/elon-musk-has-original-idea-to-solve-the-energy-crisis-in-europe<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain is one of the sunniest places in Europe, but even Spain sees a drop from a peak of over 300 hours of sunlight per month in Summer, to around 150 hours of sunlight per month in Winter. Spain also has substantial periods of bad weather \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2022\/06\/27\/spain-hit-by-biggest-solar-radiation-decline-in-28-years-in-march\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last March Spanish solar output was 50% below normal thanks to bad weather.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not sure how many batteries would be required to tide Europe through a month of poor Spanish solar output, but I\u2019m guessing it would be a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest problem though, Musk\u2019s idea isn\u2019t original. Spain already tried solar energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A decade ago, Spain was all set to be the solar power mecca of Europe. Then the solar push collapsed,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2022\/02\/21\/spains-solar-energy-crisis-62000-people-bankrupt-after-investing-in-solar-panels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">62,000 mom and pop investors went bankrupt, after the Spanish Government ran out of other people\u2019s money.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investors are still fighting court battles, trying to get compensation from the Spanish Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-0gbisTsj2w?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m guessing the solar crash was too recent, it is probably a little early for Spain to go through all that pain again, unless Musk plans to personally put up all the cash.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The biggest problem though, Musk\u2019s idea isn\u2019t original.
