The app in question displays color codes to denote their vaccination status and determine if its user has tested positive for COVID-19 or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, reports have surfaced that the Chinese Communist Party has been changing the app\u2019s color codes seemingly at random \u2013 often without legitimate proof of any infection \u2013 in order to limit the freedoms of their population&nbsp;as per the country\u2019s ruthlessly authoritarian<em>&nbsp;\u201cZero COVID\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;strategy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One shocking video that has surfaced on Twitter showed that Chinese authorities had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jamesmelville\/status\/1598670578390646784\">remotely switched the app\u2019s health status<\/a>\u00a0for a large number of individuals\u00a0traveling from the city of Guangzhou from green \u2013 indicating that the user\u00a0is COVID-free \u2013 to yellow or red \u2013 indicating exposure or full-on infection \u2013 falsely forcing them to quarantine and preventing them from traveling home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">China \ud83c\udde8\ud83c\uddf3 <br><br>The Chinese authorities have remotely switched these people\u2019s Covid digital QR passport to yellow or red to stop them from leaving Guangzhou. They are now stuck in Guangzhou and unable to travel home. <br><br>Welcome to tech totalitarianism.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fJ32VY4fg4\">pic.twitter.com\/fJ32VY4fg4<\/a><\/p>&mdash; James Melville (@JamesMelville) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesMelville\/status\/1598670578390646784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 2, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, there have been other reports of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2022-12-20\/china-covid-health-apps-tool-social-political-control\">similar occurrences happening to other Chinese residents<\/a>, illustrating that what happened in Guangzhou was far from an isolated incident.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since China adopted the use of the app, speculation as to its potential abuse has run rampant, and the topic of potentially adopting such tech by the rest of the world in order to serve as a COVID passport of sorts \u2013 where a&nbsp;<em>\u201cgreen\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;reading on the app would allow individuals to travel freely, whereas yellow or red would not \u2013 has some growing concerned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During November\u2019s&nbsp;Business 20 (B20) summit \u2013 an event which is part of the G20 Summit \u2013 the Health Minister of Indonesia, Budi Gunadi Sadikin,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USA_Anne711\/status\/1592564908214071297\">advocated for a worldwide expansion of China\u2019s program<\/a>&nbsp;in order to monitor the vaccination and infection status of individuals wishing to travel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cLet\u2019s have a digital health certificate acknowledged by [the World Health Organization].
