It was the year theory became documentary, and the documentaries had real evidence backing them. And I\u2019m here today to help you be comfortable as a conspiracy theorist. Or make you uncomfortable if you think that\u2019s impossible. Maybe in years past it was hard to pull it off. Now it\u2019s as easy as getting booted from YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fact:<\/strong>&nbsp;Last year, \u201celection fraud\u201d was for disappointed Trump voters. This year Dinesh D\u2019Souza released&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/node-3.2000mules.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2,000 Mules<\/a>,<\/em>&nbsp;the documentary that demonstrated massive ballot-boxes stuffing across the country, and 73% of&nbsp;<em>Democrats<\/em>&nbsp;who saw the film&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/politics\/public_surveys\/2000_mules_documentary_s_message_resonates_with_voters\">said they would recommend it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fact:<\/strong>&nbsp;Last year conservatives said the FBI was corrupt. This year we have the documents, from Twitter and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fact:<\/strong>\u00a0Last year we knew social media was suppressing free speech. This year we not only have the records to prove it, we have the actual messages from Washington, D.C. liberal leadership pressuring them to do it. And we know they complied. Elon Musk sums it up: \u201cTo be totally frank, almost every conspiracy theory that people had about Twitter turned out to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;To be totally frank, almost every conspiracy theory that people had about Twitter turned out to be true.\u201d<br>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ElonMusk<\/a> <br><br> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UiMTXmOl2W\">pic.twitter.com\/UiMTXmOl2W<\/a><\/p>&mdash; ALX \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 (@alx) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alx\/status\/1607069805743325184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 25, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fact:<\/strong>&nbsp;Last year COVID-19\u2019s Wuhan lab connection made good sense to people who gave it half a moment\u2019s thought. This year, people who won\u2019t bother thinking don\u2019t have to. We have the evidence. Same with the COVID-19 \u201cvaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fact?:<\/strong>&nbsp;Last year the Warren Commission\u2019s report on JFK\u2019s assassination still made good sense, and only nutcases believed the CIA might have been involved. Late this year new facts came out, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stream.org\/revisiting-the-jfk-assassination-in-the-wake-of-tucker-carlsons-bombshell-report-on-cia-involvement\/\">another answer started developing<\/a>. It remains to be established as fact, but it has lifted the CIA connection \u2014 and possibly even Lyndon Baines Johnson\u2019s involvement \u2014 well out of the tinfoil hat domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cConspiracy\u201d Theory Doesn\u2019t Equal \u201cCrackpot Theory\u201d<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is, these are still conspiracy theories. That puts them in horrible company \u2014 even if they\u2019re true. Someone (I don\u2019t care if it was a conspiracy or not) did a number on us, and got us all thinking<em>&nbsp;\u201cconspiracy theory\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;equals<em>&nbsp;\u201ctinfoil hat\/nutcase\/\u201dWe\u2019ve all been assimilated by aliens!\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;idiocy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Granted, some conspiracy theories are crazy. But if you believed in 1917 that a gang of Bolsheviks was conspiring to take over the world, you would have been right. If you\u2019d said there was a conspiracy inside the Nixon administration to cover up Watergate, you\u2019d have been right then, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Nifty Skill of Proving They\u2019re Right Without Bothering With Evidence<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was actually the Warren Commission that was responsible for the PR campaign that made \u201cconspiracy theory\u201d equivalent to \u201ccrank theory.\u201d Since then, it hasn\u2019t mattered how much proof you had for your theory. You\u2019re gullible, period. Easily influenced. Quite possibly by strange voices in your head. If you\u2019ve got evidence, it\u2019s \u201cfruitcake evidence.\u201d You\u2019re a crackpot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s do a logic test on that, though, and see how it works. This isn\u2019t conspiracy theorizing, it\u2019s just a thought experiment. Let\u2019s imagine some group in the world that\u2019s running a conspiracy. Let\u2019s give this group the most neutral label we can think of: Group A. Conspiracies by definition want to remain unknown and unsuspected, so Group A will try to hide what it\u2019s doing. Suppose, however Group B finds evidence \u2014&nbsp;<em>real<\/em>&nbsp;evidence \u2014 of what they\u2019re up to. Group A can call it a \u201cconspiracy theory,\u201d and Group B\u2019s evidence goes down the toilet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ask yourself how hard it is to imagine that happening in reality. If you\u2019re still not sure, you need to get out more.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now ask yourself, how much evidence did Group A have to show in order to prove Group B was wrong? Not one bit. They\u2019ve effectively disproved the truth, without producing one single shred of evidence. If you think that\u2019s conspiracy theorizing, do me a favor and re-read the last two paragraphs. Then ask yourself how hard it is to imagine that happening in reality. If you\u2019re still not sure, you need to get out more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Show You\u2019re Not So Crazy After All<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what do you do when you try telling someone about these conspiracies? I say you still bring evidence. You come in with clear talking points, and you tell them how you know it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not easy these days. 2022 was the year one conspiracy theory after another became conspiracy fact. So many, it\u2019s hard to keep up with them all. I sympathize. Someone tells me the COVID vaccine saves lives, and anti-vaxxers are walking death machines. I\u2019ve read a hundred articles showing that\u2019s not true, but can I pull the facts out right there on the spot? With documentation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stream.org\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Please Support&nbsp;<em>The Stream<\/em><\/a>: Equipping Christians to Think Clearly About the Political, Economic, and Moral Issues of Our Day.<a href=\"https:\/\/stream.org\/2022-the-year-the-conspiracy-theory-became-conspiracy-fact\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I guarantee you, they\u2019ve got \u201cdocumentation.\u201d Some paper they\u2019ll email you. Some \u201cstudy\u201d someone has done somewhere. You\u2019ve only got one good defense against that, and that\u2019s documentation of your own. Where do you find it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been in that situation so often, I\u2019ve decided to answer that question for myself and for others. It\u2019s coming down the pike: I\u2019ll have articles with top talking points on all the major conspiracies of 2022, and documentation to support it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go on Offense, Not Defense<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, it doesn\u2019t matter which conspiracy it is or what facts you have. You can always count on them smirking: \u201cThat\u2019s just a crazy conspiracy theory! Are you&nbsp;<em>always&nbsp;<\/em>this gullible?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First advice: Make sure your conspiracy theory isn\u2019t crazy. Some of them still are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve got that straight, ask them straight up, \u201cSeems like you think there\u2019s something automatically wrong with anyone who believes conspiracies are possible. How could you ever think something as strange as that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not exactly recommending you go on the defensive here, if you hadn\u2019t noticed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I\u2019m not exactly recommending you go on the defensive here, if you hadn\u2019t noticed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;If they retreat to saying, \u201cOkay, but it\u2019s just a theory,\u201d ask them if they know what \u201ctheory\u201d means. I bet they won\u2019t. It doesn\u2019t mean \u201cunproved belief.\u201d Rather it means a broad set of principles, beliefs, and or reasons that together help explain some facet of reality. Einstein\u2019s Relativity Theories have been supported by one scientific finding after another, for example, yet we still (rightly) call them theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Dictionaries tend to define \u201ctheory\u201d strictly in scientific terms. That\u2019s okay. We\u2019re not the ones who borrowed the word from science, they are. It\u2019s not our fault if they\u2019ve chosen such a positive word to describe something they consider so negative.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Be Comfortable as a Conspiracy Theorist<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they say, \u201cOnly loonies believe in conspiracies,\u201d ask them if they think anyone tried to cover up Watergate. Or start the Communist Revolution. Or that evangelicalism is a movement to take over the country for White Christians. (That last one really is loony, but if they believe it, you\u2019ve made your point anyway.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s where you\u2019re heading with this. They just tried using \u201cconspiracy theorist!\u201d rhetoric to rock you back on your heels. You\u2019re just returning the favor, but with evidence, not rhetoric. Be comfortable in it. Do you seem them teetering, feeling uncomfortable?&nbsp; Good. You\u2019re not guilty of a thing. They already were off balance, they just didn\u2019t know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s when you tell them it\u2019s time to quit the name-calling and look at real evidence instead.
