Dec. 29, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Points:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Climate change hasn\u2019t always been so polarizing and even today relatively few Americans deny global warming is real.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Experts say easily disprovable narratives about the climate keeps circulating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These lies and distortions target renewable energy, economics and political polarization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">There was a time \u2013 a recent time&nbsp;\u2013 when&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2017\/04\/20\/for-earth-day-heres-how-americans-view-environmental-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\">concern about the environment<\/a>&nbsp;was relatively bipartisan, not a cultural flashpoint.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wrong: Summer&nbsp;heat waves show&nbsp;renewables can\u2019t work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Power grids in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/07\/10\/high-temperatures-heat-dome-break-records\/10023708002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/09\/08\/california-heat-wave-flex-alert-hurricane-kay\/8021533001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">California<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/07\/31\/pacific-northwest-heat-wave-deaths\/10195963002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pacific Northwest<\/a>&nbsp;all faced extreme heat events this summer. Each power system was pushed to the brink&nbsp;by the draw on electricity&nbsp;for air conditioning. And yet none broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, a false narrative&nbsp;circulated saying that solar and wind energy had made those power grids \u2013 and especially California\u2019s \u2013 fragile and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/todaysclimate\/texas-officials-blame-renewables-for-heatwave-blackout-risk-experts-say-thats-misleading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unable to cope with high demands.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In Texas in July, a heat wave caused the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to take emergency measures, including urging residents to restrict their use and paying power operators as much as $5,000 per megawatt hour to keep generators running.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ERCOT said two factors affected its ability to meet soaring demand: low wind power generation and<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/business\/2021\/07\/09\/ercot-plants-behind-texas-power-outages-also-triggered-june-unplanned-outages\/7888156002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>outages<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<strong>at coal- and natural gas-fed power plants.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Blaming renewable energy as the cause of power crunches is unfair<\/strong>, said David Doniger, senior strategic director in the Natural Resources Defense Council\u2019s climate and clean energy program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/12\/29\/global-warming-myths-disinformation-and-lies-circulated-2022\/10802959002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/12\/29\/global-warming-myths-disinformation-and-lies-circulated-2022\/10802959002\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The article goes on to discuss whether ESG is \u201cwoke capitalism\u201d, whether climate concern is only for the far left, and whether there is any hope for fixing climate change. USA Today lists \u201c<em>\u2026 the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.eco\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Conservation Coalition<\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergyconservatives.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Conservatives for Clean Energy<\/a>, Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions&nbsp;and&nbsp;Congress\u2019&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2021\/07\/16\/how-conservatives-can-fight-climate-change-and-protect-our-economy\/7962424002\/\" target=\"_blank\">Conservative Climate Caucus<\/a>.<\/em>\u201d as evidence that Conservatives want renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But let\u2019s focus on whether it is \u201cfair\u201d to blame renewables for failing during extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is obviously YES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Is it possible for fossil fuel and nuclear plants to fail in hot or cold weather? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Absolutely. But nuclear and fossil fuel plants can be hardened against weather extremes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The same can\u2019t be said for renewables.
