Sterling Burnett<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A story published by CNBC claims climate change is damaging Cambodia\u2019s crops by making it hard for Cambodian farmers and fishers to pay back loans they\u2019ve taken out against their assets due to climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This is false. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Some Cambodian farmers and fishers may be finding it difficult to pay back loans they have taken out to finance production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This is problem for many farmers the world over. However, production of Cambodia\u2019s major crops have increased significantly during the recent period of climate change. As a result, agriculturalists\u2019 financial difficulties are due to factors other than climate change hampering crop production, because it is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Jenni Read, the author of the CNBC story, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/27\/facing-climate-change-asia-farmers-turn-to-risky-microfinance-loans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hit by climate change, farmers in Cambodia are risking everything on microfinance loans<\/a>,\u201d claims:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Crop failures due to erratic weather and wildfires are leading farmers to take out loans to survive, with their land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cmicrofinance\u201d industry \u2014 long touted as a way to help poor, rural communities in developing countries \u2014 is pushing tens of thousands of farming families into debt traps as they attempt to adapt to a changing climate, according to a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Read cites a study produced with funding from the NGO,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/what-we-offer\/international-funding\/global-challenges-research-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Research and Innovation\u2019s Global Challenges Research Fund<\/a>, as the basis of her report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Agriculture is most important source of income in Cambodia\u2019s rural regions, and the third most important sector for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy_of_Cambodia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cambodian economy<\/a>&nbsp;as a whole, accounting for more than 25 percent of the nation\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Like agriculture in neighboring Vietnam and nearby Thailand, Cambodian food production is reliant on seasonal monsoons.\u00a0<em>Climate Realism<\/em>\u00a0previously refuted claims that climate change has undermined crop production in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climaterealism.com\/2020\/08\/environment-minister-lies-about-climate-changes-impact-on-cambodia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cambodia<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climaterealism.com\/2020\/07\/forbes-triple-idiocy-part-2-india-and-thailand-crisis-as-rice-production-sets-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thailand<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climaterealism.com\/2021\/05\/voice-of-america-claims-global-warming-is-decimating-vietnam-rice-production-as-yields-keeps-setting-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vietnam<\/a>\u00a0by making monsoons more erratic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Since, climate change is not worsening weather trends in the region those countries inhabit it can\u2019t be undercutting food production\u2014and the data confirms, contrary to CNBC\u2019 s claim, it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Among Cambodia\u2019s top crops are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Cambodia\/Agriculture-forestry-and-fishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rice and cassava.<\/a>\u00a0Data from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) demonstrate that between 1990 and 2020, production of each of those crops has broken records for yearly production multiple times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The FAO\u2019 s data shows, rice production increased by approximately 350 percent since 1990, and cassava production grew by an amazing 12,527 percent. FAO doesn\u2019t keep records of sea food production, however, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seafdec.org\/fisheries-country-profile-cambodia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Asian Fisheries Development Center<\/a>\u00a0has, until recently, for the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Its data show that between 2009 and 2017, the last year of available data, inland and marine capture of fish, and aquaculture production have all increased substantially, producing an overall increase in fish production topping 66 percent.
