Continued US support for Ukraine to some extent will depend on Zelensky\u2019s relationship with the US Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Congressional Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy has already indicated he won\u2019t be writing any blank cheques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>House Republicans divided over aid to Ukraine ahead of midterms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">McCarthy says Congress won\u2019t \u2018write a blank cheque\u2019 while another senior Republicans says Ukrainians should \u2018get what they need\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/julianborger\">Julian Borger<\/a>&nbsp;in Washington Wed 19 Oct 2022 06.24 AEDT<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kevin McCarthy<\/strong>, the House minority leader, told the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/\">Punchbowl News<\/a>website on Tuesday: \u201c<strong>I think people are going to be sitting in a recession and they\u2019re not going to write a blank cheque to Ukraine.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey just won\u2019t do it,\u201d McCarthy added. \u201cIt\u2019s not a free blank cheque. And then there\u2019s the things [the Biden administration] is not doing domestically: not doing the border and people begin to weigh that.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a>&nbsp;is important, but at the same time it can\u2019t be the only thing they do, and it can\u2019t be a blank cheque.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few hours later, however, the ranking Republican on the House foreign affairs committee, Michael McCaul, who is likely to run the committee in the event of a Republican win in November, argued that arms supplies to Ukraine should be stepped up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to give them what they need. When we give them what they need, they win,\u201d McCaul said on the Bloomberg television channel. In particular he referred to the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), which has a longer range than the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/01\/himars-what-are-the-advanced-rockets-us-is-sending-ukraine\">missiles the administration is currently providing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/oct\/18\/republicans-ukraine-midterm-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/oct\/18\/republicans-ukraine-midterm-elections<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">I understand Zelensky\u2019s motivation, in his position I would talk to anyone and everyone, and say anything, to get the weapons needed to fight Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But stepping into the climate change arena is playing with fire, in ways Zelensky may not be aware of. Supporting the opponents of the people who now hold the purse strings in the USA is a dangerous move, for someone who utterly depends on continued US generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Zelensky should remember, the USA is under no obligation to help.&nbsp;<strong>It is not America\u2019s job to sign blank cheques to fund every feel good righteous sounding cause<\/strong>, especially when Europe could be doing a lot more to pull their weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/04\/bnef-european-energy-transition-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The trillions of dollars Europe plans to squander on renewables<\/a>\u00a0in the next few years are only available because the USA helps pay for Europe\u2019s defence \u2013 otherwise Europe would need much of that money to fund their own armies and equipment, instead of relying on the USA to pay the bills.
