And contrary to predictions of increased \u2018conflict\u2019 between polar bears and people around Churchill, there have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polarbearscience.com\/2022\/11\/04\/polar-bear-triplet-litter-spotted-near-churchill-as-ice-starts-to-form-along-west-coast-of-hudson-bay\/\">fewer problem bear reports<\/a>\u00a0there in recent years,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/churchill.ca\/p\/polar-bear-safety-stats\">this year included<\/a>. In other words, there is no \u2018climate crisis\u2019 for polar bears, even in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polarbearscience.com\/2021\/10\/15\/no-signs-of-a-climate-emergency-for-w-hudson-bay-polar-bears-this-year-ahead-of-un-climate-meeting\/\">Western Hudson Bay<\/a>, and recent models of a dire future for polar bears are based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polarbearscience.com\/2020\/11\/11\/shorefast-ice-formation-and-the-fall-feeding-season-for-polar-bears\/\">totally implausible worst-case climate scenarios<\/a>. Sea ice loss since 1979 has been so gradual that polar bears have been able to adapt, either through\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/polarbearscience.com\/2014\/09\/30\/natural-selection-helps-polar-bears-adapt-to-sea-ice-variability-which-means-some-bears-die\/\">natural selection<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polarbearscience.com\/2018\/01\/09\/franz-josef-land-is-a-sea-ice-refugium-for-most-pregnant-barents-sea-polar-bears\/\">changes in behaviour<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Arctic Sea Ice Conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">From the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nsidc.org\/arcticseaicenews\/2022\/11\/winter-is-coming\/\">NSIDC,<\/a>\u00a0October summary shows no declining trend in sea ice coverage since 2007, despite repeated claims by some activists that sea ice conditions have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ca.style.yahoo.com\/cop27-loss-arctic-summer-sea-160000781.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJHIs82Y_2vvU52-nn6Rrd4fhbvV7Zn6Wa0SKnQb1_8h7aYxVgKIoXuL5n-bZ2sgvZ0PyencHCO2lFYsLAD96TRHuiRIlIUvCaW_i9qx8m55PPs3BntCu50dA3kn2K0_YyIvby7RWOIVR6H9vIdY50BwVBR1mJ5gyy2SurpuLdal\">continuously href=\"https:\/\/polarbearscience.com\/2020\/11\/03\/western-southern-hudson-bay-polar-bears-experience-earliest-freeze-up-in-decades\/\">as early as the earliest freeze-ups in the 1980<\/a>s, but not by much. In the 1980s, most bears left for the ice at freeze-up (10% sea ice coverage) about 16 November \u00b1 5 days (Castro de la Guardia 2017, see graph below). Barring offshore winds that force the ice away, this year should be similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That means Explore.org PBI-affiliated moderator \u2018Cloud\u2019 was passing along disinformation to viewers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/explore.org\/livecams\/polar-bears\/polar-bear-cam#comment-6035050871\">when she said two days ago<\/a>&nbsp;[my bold]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe ice is just starting to form on Hudson Bay.&nbsp;<strong>It is much later than years past,<\/strong>&nbsp;but typical for our present times.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Virtually all Western Hudson Bay bears leave the shore within about 2 days of sea ice concentration reaching 10% (Castro de la Guardia 2017), although Southern Hudson Bay bears leave when it reaches about 5% (Obbard et al. 2015, 2016).
