His\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shortfall.blog\/the-deep-optimism-manifesto-262f273c919d\">Deep Optimism Manifesto<\/a>\u00a0spells out a new approach to viewing the world that is at once realistic and optimistic. Written last year, its message is timeless and timely. It\u2019s a group of smart people doing very important work to help improve the future for humanity and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"c8b5\">I think if they looked more into the science of climate change and the economics of abundance, they would arrive at&nbsp;<em>Deep Optimism<\/em>, a term coined by Matt Ridley, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/rationaloptimist.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rational optimist<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"9e85\">People who understand the economics of abundance don\u2019t apply enough critical thinking to understanding climate and the natural world (<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@pullnews\/in-memory-of-hans-rosling-9116b88fc532\">Hans Rosling<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lomborg.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bjorn Lomborg<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diamandis.com\/blog\/all\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Diamandis<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/marginalrevolution.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Cowen<\/a>, Steven Pinker). They take model projections of doom and gloom at face value, which dampens their message of abundance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"e240\">Here I present the basic principles as I see them. (Opinions expressed here are my own.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9559\">In a Nutshell<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"010a\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media4.manhattan-institute.org\/pdf\/ir_12.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Capitalism works<\/a>. Capitalism does more to help the world than the UN, World Economic Forum,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/opinion\/terence-corcoran-clubs-of-doom-and-the-limits-to-models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Club of Rome<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bOHrYY3yAGE&amp;list=PLgC87pss25stI0vSU0l5oHssFfKAq3rBA&amp;index=7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA<\/a>, Joe Biden, John Kerry, and a long list of clueless celebrities put together. Capitalism helps humans escape poverty and improve the environment. By moving a billion people from poverty to the middle class, we have automatically moved more subsistence farmers into homes with electricity, gas stoves, and mobile phones. By focusing on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=No6kQjRF5D0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-run economic growth<\/a>, we&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YNMBInTP1p8\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">automatically solve our environmental problems<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/poverty-minimum-growth-needed#is-it-possible-to-achieve-both-a-reduction-of-humanity-s-negative-impact-on-the-environment-and-a-reduction-of-global-poverty\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We will end this century with many fewer poor people than we started<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/voxeu.org\/article\/wealth-and-history-reappraisal\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wealth is not nearly as unevenly distributed as you think it is<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shortfall.blog\/the-best-video-ive-ever-made-on-the-science-of-climate-change-9ec9d105134e\"><strong>CO2 is not driving temperatures or climate<\/strong><\/a><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong>This is difficult for people to see because there is so much noise and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Politics-Climate-Change-Andy-May\/dp\/1636252621\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a history of politically driven messaging<\/a>. If you study climate for ten minutes to ten hours, I can almost guarantee you won\u2019t reach this conclusion. But if you study climate for 20 hours or more, and you\u2019re willing to think critically about cognitive biases, political messaging, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fcpp.org\/2019\/02\/07\/lets-do-follow-the-climate-money\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the amount of money spent on \u201cresearch<\/a>,\u201d you will find&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/climatecurious.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a group of highly qualified scientists and statisticians yelling from the rooftops that CO2 is not and probably never has been a driver of the earth\u2019s climate<\/a>. There are huge mistakes in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/andymaypetrophysicist.com\/2020\/11\/23\/the-u-s-national-temperature-index-is-it-based-on-data-or-corrections\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the data<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/patricepoyet.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calculations<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ewJ6TI8ccAw&amp;t=557s\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The \u201cscientific consensus\u201d is a myth<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clintel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/World-Climate-Declaration-Sept-2020.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">There is no climate emergency<\/a>. Contrary to what you have been told,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/co2coalition.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CO2 is actually beneficial for life<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HMHkIqRTQO8\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is not causing problems in the oceans<\/a>. (I know that sounds heretical, hang in there.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Previous eco-scares and doomsday predictions have proven to be false.<\/strong>&nbsp;Everything from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/why-malthus-is-still-wrong\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Malthus\u2019s predictions of mass starvation&nbsp;<\/a>to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rationaloptimist.com\/blog\/tobacco-denial-and-pesticide-alarm\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Silent Spring<\/a>&nbsp;(DDT) to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/sci\/244\/4900\/9.full.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alar<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rationaloptimist.com\/blog\/acid-oceans-and-acid-rain\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acid rain<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stephenschneider.stanford.edu\/Publications\/PDF_Papers\/Crichton2003.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nuclear winter<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KpFulHDz9wg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ocean acidification<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rationaloptimist.com\/blog\/the-ozone-hole-was-exaggerated-as-a-problem\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ozone<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/01\/us\/the-unrealized-horrors-of-population-explosion.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Population Bomb<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2017\/06\/the-ends-of-the-world\/529545\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mass extinctions<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/quillette.com\/2021\/07\/25\/the-insect-apocalypse-that-never-was\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">insect populations crashing<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsh.org\/news\/2018\/04\/17\/bee-apocalypse-was-never-real-heres-why-12851\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bee colony collapse<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/soy\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">soy products<\/a>&nbsp;causing everything from cancer to infertility.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/x6aai0wP6IA\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sea levels are not rising more than they were in the 1800s<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HmPAEtn0lpU\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Polar bears are thriving<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2017\/06\/the-ends-of-the-world\/529545\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Extinction rates aren\u2019t particularly high and are not increasing<\/a>. These scares are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fake-Invisible-Catastrophes-Threats-Doom-ebook\/dp\/B08T6FFY6S\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">always invisible and always out in the future<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lawliberty.org\/book-review\/how-media-bias-caused-the-moral-panic-surrounding-climate-change\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The scare is great for media sales, so they amplify it<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesocialdilemma.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Social media amplifies it further<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>As technology advances, dematerialization reduces the use of natural resources.&nbsp;<\/strong>Your mobile phone is now your camera, answering machine, calendar, pen, video camera, watch, and much more. Soon it will be your heart monitor, baby monitor, chauffeur, doctor, and much more. Car sharing, mass transport, megacities, and other developments will reduce our requirements for raw materials. We reached peak factory worker on planet earth more than 15 years ago.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0U3z6QYZOIM\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We have already reached peak farmland<\/a>&nbsp;and soon&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/nz-has-reached-peak-milk-fonterra-cfo-warns\/W45I6TXRLZFR6KDABBV57WDWBQ\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">peak milk<\/a>. Even though the population is growing, we produce more and more value with less and less material. For more than 60 commodities, we are already on the downslope, even as populations continue to grow (see video below).&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-metaverse\/why-the-metaverse-will-be-huge-f904a3a3d2a?sk=cf57e29a7f9b0b29f92dc9f279ec0f4c\">The Metaverse&nbsp;<\/a>will accelerate this trend. Bonus \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pullnews.medium.com\/why-jeff-bezos-is-wrong-and-why-i-should-meet-mackenzie-bezos-fc75b76253df\">no need to colonize space or other planets<\/a>!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>As technology advances, we will use far less land for agriculture, returning a huge amount back to nature.<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.uchicago.edu\/story\/rna-breakthrough-crops-grow-50-percent-more-potatoes-rice-climate-change\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It\u2019s already happening<\/a>&nbsp;(see video below).&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/journal\/issue-5\/the-return-of-nature\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We are using less land for agriculture than we did ten years ago<\/a>. Soon, a large percentage of our chicken, fish, and beef \u2014 even filets and steaks \u2014 will be manufactured in labs, providing safer food at lower prices with far less land, fishing, agricultural runoff, and bycatch. By 2050, we\u2019ll feed 9 billion people and&nbsp;<em>should be able to return an area of land the size of India back to natural forests<\/em>. (See video below.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The oceans need some attention.<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/111\/28\/10239.short\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Humans are not destroying the oceans with plastic<\/a>, but they are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0003881\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overfishing and destroying fish stock<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/what-should-you-eat\/protein\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Humans eat too much protein<\/a>. We should&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81014008\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eat fewer fish<\/a>&nbsp;(but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/science\/seaspiracy-fact-check-debunked-interview\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">put the problem in perspective<\/a>).&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0308597X13000055\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Humans kill 100 million sharks each year<\/a>, exceeding the rebound rate for most shark populations. Fortunately,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/article\/good-news-for-tuna-populations-in-latest-iucn-update\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tuna are on the rebound<\/a>, showing that management is possible.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/books\/privatization-oceans\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rent seeking and poor governance of the commons is a big part of the problem<\/a>. We need to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/340290930_Comprehensive_bycatch_assessment_in_US_fisheries_for_prioritizing_management\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">measure<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/international\/bycatch\/national-bycatch-reduction-strategy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reduce<\/a>&nbsp;bycatch considerably. (See video below.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Local problems need local solutions.<\/strong>&nbsp;There are perverse incentives and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pullnews.medium.com\/the-shortfall-master-list-decd5dd37132?sk=1e6f9eb10667427cbf3df035cdbe15a5\">shortfalls<\/a>&nbsp;that need attention. Forest fires, floods, landslides, famine, water quality, and drought are all local, and most of them are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.landscapesandcycles.net\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the unintended consequences of bad management<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National problems need market-based solutions.<\/strong>&nbsp;Monopolies, market manipulation, poor treatment of laborers, unfair practices, racism, sexism, ageism,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesocialdilemma.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perverse incentives<\/a>, unfair access to resources, pollution, and other problems do need to be addressed. But we are over-regulated. Regulation is mostly virtue signaling for politicians, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pullnews.medium.com\/the-shortfall-master-list-decd5dd37132?sk=1e6f9eb10667427cbf3df035cdbe15a5\">unintended consequences that live on for decades<\/a>. Subsidies distort markets and play favorites. Politicians are more the problem than the solution \u2014 it\u2019s time to look beyond representative government. We can learn from people like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Radical-Markets-Uprooting-Capitalism-Democracy-ebook\/dp\/B07TP5HLWQ\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glen Weyl and Eric Posner<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.overcomingbias.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robin Hanson<\/a>, who have been&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mason.gmu.edu\/~rhanson\/futarchy.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thinking differently about incentive systems<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radicalxchange.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">doing experiments<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.giordano.institute\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More infrastructure should be open-source<\/a>, not privately controlled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>International problems need international solutions.<\/strong>&nbsp;Some countries compete unfairly by dumping, doping products, exploiting workers, manipulating tariffs, closing borders, government corruption, currency manipulation, political posturing, and more. Many international governing bodies are ineffective or corrupt. You can learn about many of these problems in the food industry by watching the Netflix series&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80146284\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rotten<\/a>. This is an area where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pullnews.medium.com\/the-future-of-governance-in-europe-83f9e31e87bc\">good governance<\/a>&nbsp;really makes a difference. We should&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercatus.org\/publications\/trade-and-immigration\/benefits-free-trade-addressing-key-myths\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remove trading friction<\/a>, allow&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bUIDVf04CRU\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">open borders<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pull-Power-Semantic-Transform-Business-ebook\/dp\/B002YJK5KK\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">build better trading and digital ecosystems<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radicalxchange.org\/media\/papers\/data-freedom-act.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better understand network effects<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pullnews.medium.com\/the-future-of-governance-in-europe-83f9e31e87bc\">improve the incentives<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Renewable energy is not a viable solution.<\/strong>&nbsp;Wind farms and solar arrays&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lL6uB1z95gA\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">destroy the very land and nature we are trying to save<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattancontrarian.com\/blog\/2021-7-29-a-little-arithmetic-the-costs-of-non-fossil-fuel-back-up-for-solar-power\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are not scalable<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shortfall.substack.com\/p\/the-high-cost-of-solar-trash\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the economics don\u2019t work<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadmaptonowhere.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The race to Net Zero is a race to the bottom<\/a>, it\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/patricepoyet.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">based on false assumptions<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2020\/11\/12\/modern-climate-change-science\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the science is seriously distorted<\/a>, and it has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pullnews.medium.com\/challenges-of-electrification-the-energy-transition-401ea398927\">impossible targets<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/industrialprogress.com\/issues\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">They must all be backed up 100 percent by dispatchable power to make up for shortfalls in production and storage<\/a>, which will consume&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattan-institute.org\/mines-minerals-and-green-energy-reality-check\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more minerals and resources than we are prepared to mine<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02222-1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We will need technology we don\u2019t have today<\/a>, but&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shortfall.blog\/living-in-the-windless-dark-part-i-the-renewable-big-picture-8df432863cca\">are renewables worth the cost<\/a>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nuclear power is future power.<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/environmentalprogress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nuclear is the dispatchable power the world needs<\/a>. If we work on it,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cbrT3m89Y3M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nuclear power plants will be built in a factory and shipped to markets around the world<\/a>, along with enough fuel to power them for ten years. At the end of that time, send them back for refurbishing and refueling.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tHO1ebNxhVI&amp;list=PLgC87pss25suM9Fe_B4gK1QH4BpmzU3fs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This can last indefinitely with minimal waste<\/a>. Markets will naturally \u201ctransition\u201d from today\u2019s power sources to nuclear without any government mandates, carbon offsets, or subsidies. Cheap reliable power solves many, many problems.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"059d\">Summary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"3fd3\">There is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2016\/02\/does-capitalism-have-to-be-bad-for-the-environment\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a general attack on capitalism these days<\/a>, claiming that greedy capitalists are destroying the world to make a profit.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Less-More-Degrowth-Will-World-ebook\/dp\/B085L9XSM1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Degrowth<\/a>&nbsp;is the new plastics.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a5gwJ382dIw\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;Wokeness is winning<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AQNBO6WbQo8\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Doom and gloom is coming unless we change radically<\/a>. I believe those arguments are based on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Stubborn-Attachments-Prosperous-Responsible-Individuals-ebook\/dp\/B07G9DFC8W\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faulty assumptions and faulty models of the future<\/a>. As we optimists see it, people don\u2019t understand how good things are and how much better they will be. And we get called names for this! People get upset when they learn that the world<em>&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;<\/em>about to end and children don\u2019t&nbsp;<em>have<\/em>&nbsp;to fear for their futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"5d56\">With the exception of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@pullnews\/in-memory-of-hans-rosling-9116b88fc532\">not understanding climate science<\/a>, Hans Rosling makes the case elegantly using simple numbers in his book,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Factfulness-Reasons-World-Things-Better-ebook\/dp\/B0756J1LLV\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Factfulness<\/em><\/a><em>:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"5ca3\">In this incredibly important talk, Jesse Ausubel unpacks the data to show just how far we have come. Anyone concerned about the environment should watch&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.embedly.com\/widgets\/media.html?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2F0U3z6QYZOIM&amp;display_name=YouTube&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D0U3z6QYZOIM&amp;image=http%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2F0U3z6QYZOIM%2Fhqdefault.jpg&amp;key=a19fcc184b9711e1b4764040d3dc5c07&amp;type=text%2Fhtml&amp;schema=youtube\">this video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"7bb2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephenschneider.stanford.edu\/Publications\/PDF_Papers\/Crichton2003.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Crichton\u2019s essay on groupthink<\/a>&nbsp;is astonishingly succinct and relevant to today\u2019s conversation on how politicians use scientism to accomplish their agendas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"8070\">My&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shortfall.blog\/carbon-dioxide-has-reached-a-point-of-diminishing-returns-d1bb260fa0d5\">short essay on the greenhouse effect<\/a>&nbsp;helps people see that they don\u2019t really understand climate science, that it may not be what they have been told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"55ba\">If you watched those two videos and read those two essays, I hope you\u2019ll see that the world is not collapsing. The world is far better off than you thought, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.giordano.institute\/the-machine-economy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the future will be even better<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"cd44\">I\u2019m sorry to be the bearer of such good news.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edberry.com\/blog\/climate\/climate-politics\/the-story-behind-climate-alarmism\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How did you get so cynical in the first place<\/a>?
