Over the last several weeks, many mainstream news media outlets have claimed that hurricanes are becoming more expensive, more frequent, and more intense because of climate change, says Michael Shellenberger (via Climate Change Dispatch)<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The Financial Times reported that \u201churricane frequency is on the rise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The New York Times claimed, \u201cstrong storms are becoming more common in the Atlantic Ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The Washington Post said, \u201cclimate change is rapidly fueling super hurricanes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 ABC News declared, \u201cHere\u2019s how climate change intensifies hurricanes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Both the FT and NY Times showed graphs purporting to show rising hurricane frequency using data from the U.S. government\u2019s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All those claims are false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increasing cost of hurricane damage can be explained entirely by more people and more property in harm\u2019s way. Consider how much more developed Miami Beach is today compared to a century ago. Once you adjust for rising wealth, there is no trend of increasing damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claims that hurricanes are becoming more frequent are similarly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter adjusting for a likely undercount of hurricanes in the pre-satellite era,\u201d writes NOAA, \u201cthere is essentially no long-term trend in hurricane counts. The evidence for an upward trend is even weaker if we look at U.S. landfalling hurricanes, which even show a slight negative trend beginning from 1900 or from the late 1800s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s more, NOAA expects a 25% decline in hurricane frequency in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about intensity? Same story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
