Australian homes can get very cold and with heating bills rocketing, things are defacto becoming like life in Berlin, which is in a pre-War energy crisis footing. No one labeled Canberra public halls as \u201cwarm spaces\u201d and they definitely aren\u2019t open at night (it\u2019s the public service!), but crowds are arriving at libraries just to escape the cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ACT Government are a Labor-Green alliance, and are proudly, exuberantly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.environment.act.gov.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0007\/987991\/100-Renewal-Energy-Tri-fold-ACCESS.pdf\">\u201c100% Renewable\u201d,<\/a>&nbsp;but won\u2019t dare cut the cord to the coal plants that keep the lights on, making the claims of being 100% renewable a form of false advertising. Even the ABC admits that the ACT itself only generates 5% of its own power, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-10-01\/act-is-100-per-cent-renewable-but-what-does-that-mean\/11560356\">80% of the energy coming to the ACT through the wires is from fossil fuels<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The local newspaper is running stories about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/story\/7756079\/how-cold-is-too-cold-getting-home-temperatures-right\/\">\u201cright temperature\u201d to heat homes to<\/a>. They suggest 18\u00b0C (colder than the public buildings in Germany which are now set down to 20\u00b0C). A few years ago I stayed with a friend in Canberra and the room was 11\u00b0C (and it was only May!). Thanks to \u201cprogressive\u201d energy policies, despite all the hi-tech solar panels, and deals with wind farms 1000km away,&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hercanberra.com.au\/style\/home-design\/burning-log-wood-heater\/\">Canberran\u2019s are rediscovering the joys of wood fires<\/a>. It\u2019s where clients of the NDIS, escorted by carers, are brought and propped up in their wheelchairs in front of computers or seated in deep armchairs by the magazine stands. Some, abandoned by their carers, shout incoherently for attention. Currently, around 14 per cent of people in the ACT use a woodfire heater as their main source of heating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analysis of air quality shows the impacts of smoke are worse down south because the shape of the valley and temperature inversions hold pollutants closer to the ground.
