It turns out this claim is too pessimistic, even for climate scientist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_E._Mann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Mann<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I completely agree. It is not what the article says and certainly not what I say in the book.<br><br>Headline writers have a lot to answer for &#8211; even in the Guardian. Note: this is not the headline in the print edition.<\/p>&mdash; Bill McGuire (@ProfBillMcGuire) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProfBillMcGuire\/status\/1553857078644596738?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 31, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bill McGuire, the scientist quoted by the original Guardian article, seems to feel his words were misinterpreted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2022\/07\/31\/claim-soon-it-will-be-unrecognisable-total-climate-meltdown-cannot-be-stopped\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian quoted McGuire as saying<\/a>&nbsp;\u201c<em>I know a lot of people working in climate science who say one thing in public but a very different thing in private. In confidence, they are all much more scared about the future we face, but they won\u2019t admit that in public. I call this climate appeasement and I believe it only makes things worse.&nbsp;<strong>The world needs to know how bad things are going to get before we can hope to start to tackle the crisis<\/strong>.<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How does this reconcile with McGuire apparently accusing the Guardian headline writers of misinterpreting his words, with their headline&nbsp;<strong><em>\u2018Soon it will be unrecognisable\u2019: total climate meltdown cannot be stopped, says expert<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I invite readers to read&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/jul\/30\/total-climate-meltdown-inevitable-heatwaves-global-catastrophe\" target=\"_blank\">the Guardian article<\/a>&nbsp;which triggered this scramble, see if you can figure out what McGuire\u2019s problem is. I thought the headline was a fair summary of the content \u2013 but make up your own minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for Mann, he seems to have taken upon himself the role of Guardian of the Balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping the climate alarm movement going appears to be a delicate balancing act between fear and despair.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/behavioralscientist.org\/urgency-and-agency-michael-mann-on-conquering-climate-despair\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Mann frequently warns activists about the dangers of \u201cclimate doomism\u201d<\/a>, pessimism so intense people lose the motivation to be activists.
