They trace the channel where the filament (R.I.P.) was previously suspended by magnetic forces inside the sun\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debris from the explosion formed a slow-moving coronal mass ejection (CME), shown here in a movie from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO):<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceweatherarchive.files.wordpress.com\/2022\/04\/cof_cme.gif?w=512&#038;resize=573%2C573\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3565\" width=\"573\" height=\"573\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CME is not squarely Earth-directed. The bulk of the cloud is expected to miss. However, there is clearly a small Earth-directed component, which could sideswipe our planet\u2019s magnetic field on April 7th.
