They became so dependent that they have to carefully craft sanctions to avoid punishing Russia\u2019s oil and gas exports, its most important source of revenue. This is shameful and it&#8217;s time to give up on the radical climate policies pushed by influential groups like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.owler.com\/company\/sierraclub\">Sierra Club<\/a>, Natural Resources Defense Council (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.owler.com\/company\/nrdc\">NRDC<\/a>), and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.owler.com\/company\/greenpeace\">Greenpeace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/0Greenpeace-moron-768x471-1.png?resize=723%2C443&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-145796\" width=\"723\" height=\"443\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For decades, these groups have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/environmentalprogress.org\/the-war-on-nuclear\">utilized<\/a>&nbsp;misinformation campaigns and regulatory capture to influence governments to abandon the production of baseload energy sources, including natural gas and nuclear, and go all-in on solar and wind.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/environmentalprogress.org\/nrdc\">Even<\/a>&nbsp;if importing Russian fossil fuels are required to get you there. In fact, energy security is a bad thing, according to the prominent Sierra Club adviser&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scu.edu\/environmental-ethics\/environmental-activists-heroes-and-martyrs\/amory-lovins.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIf%20you%20ask%20me%2C%20it,we%20would%20do%20with%20it.\">Amory Lovins<\/a>, who once&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/environmentalprogress.org\/sierra-club\">said<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019d be little short of disastrous for us to discover a source of clean, cheap, abundant energy because of what we would do with it.\u201d I\u2019d like him to tell that to the European countries currently scrambling for fossil fuels that were made scarce and expensive by the policies he advocates for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany, which just appointed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/09\/world\/europe\/germany-jennifer-morgan-greenpeace.html\">head of Greenpeace<\/a>\u00a0as its climate czar, has been the world\u2019s most ambitious adopter of this radical approach. Its aggressive climate campaign, entitled\u00a0<em>Energiewende<\/em>, has been centered around a complete abandonment of nuclear power (the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamesconca\/2012\/06\/10\/energys-deathprint-a-price-always-paid\/?sh=43423f8709b7\">safest<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/safest-sources-of-energy#:~:text=Nuclear%20energy%2C%20for%20example%2C%20results,hydropower%20are%20more%20safe%20yet.\">cleanest<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/ne\/articles\/nuclear-power-most-reliable-energy-source-and-its-not-even-close\">most reliable<\/a>\u00a0form of energy) and a dogmatic push for solar and wind power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"511\" data-attachment-id=\"190880\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/climatescience.press\/?attachment_id=190880\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?fit=1200%2C848&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1200,848\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?fit=723%2C511&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?resize=723%2C511&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-190880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?resize=1024%2C724&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?resize=768%2C543&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?resize=816%2C577&amp;ssl=1 816w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?resize=113%2C80&amp;ssl=1 113w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/0fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So how has&nbsp;<em>Energiewende<\/em>&nbsp;turned out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, a decade after\u00a0<em>Energiewende\u00a0<\/em>was launched, wind and solar combined for a mere 5.2% of Germany\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleanenergywire.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/gallery_image\/public\/paragraphs\/images\/fig10-germany-energy-mix-energy-sources-share-primary-energy-consumption-2021.png?itok=XmYkdZD_\">primary energy consumption<\/a>. Oil and gas accounted for a combined 58.5%; and its last 3 nuclear plants combined for 6.2%. It currently gets\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/with-nord-stream-2-freeze-germany-takes-first-step-to-cut-russian-gas-reliance-11645640316\">over half<\/a>\u00a0of its natural gas from Russia, without the Nord Stream 2. To sum up,\u00a0<em>Energiewende<\/em>\u00a0has been an utter failure that has resulted in the continent\u2019s priciest and most carbon-intensive electricity grid, all while increasing dependence on the Russian fossil fuels that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/russia\/imports-by-country\">fund<\/a>\u00a0Putin\u2019s expansionary efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things start making more sense when you consider that Germany\u2019s former chancellor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/outrage-germany-ex-chancellor-schroder-gazprom-board-nomination\/\">Gerhard&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/outrage-germany-ex-chancellor-schroder-gazprom-board-nomination\/\">Schr\u00f6der<\/a>&nbsp;is chairman of the board of Nord Stream 2 AG, which has all but collapsed in recent days. He was also nominated to the board of Gazprom, Russia\u2019s state gas monopoly which has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KaplanBen_Fr\/status\/1497663247071203333\">accused<\/a>&nbsp;of funding green groups. Schr\u00f6der led the same environmentally-focused coalition that still controls Munich, and he is a close friend of Vladimir Putin. While he\u2019s not making political decisions anymore, his anti-nuclear and pro-Russia legacy still&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/international\/germany\/gerhard-schroeder-casts-a-dark-shadow-over-berlin-s-foreign-policy-a-b1429dea-5db2-401e-b11d-71e22ee9d076\">thrives<\/a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germanys-social-democrats-and-their-putin-sympathizers\/a-18088650\">Social Democrat Party<\/a>. It\u2019s no secret that the Kremlin uses dark money to influence Western politics&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/russian-influence-operations-germany-and-their-effect\">in a number of ways<\/a>, so it shouldn\u2019t be surprising that they\u2019d want to influence destabilizing \u201cgreen\u201d policies like the abandonment of LNG and nuclear production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia is also trying to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/us-green-groups-carry-out-russias-bidding-in-fracking-fight\">steer green policy<\/a>&nbsp;in the U.S. through dark money groups. For example, the Sierra Club, NRDC, and Greenpeace take&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/sea-change-foundation\/\">tens of millions of dollars<\/a>&nbsp;from Sea Change International, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/environmental.pasenategop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2018\/09\/mooney.pdf\">has faced<\/a>&nbsp;Congressional scrutiny because it operates through shell companies in Bermuda with probable ties to the Kremlin. Another group,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/russian-troll-factory-hacking\/31076160.html\">Internet Research Agency<\/a>, is a Russian troll farm that infiltrates discussions on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to galvanize support for progressive climate policies that weaken American oil and gas companies\u2019 ability to compete with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now energy insecurity has been exposed in the worst way with a heinous war on Ukraine, forcing long-overdue action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, Germany\u2019s Chancellor Olaf Scholz,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/germany-step-up-plans-cut-dependence-russia-gas-2022-02-27\/\">asserted<\/a>, \u201cwe must change course to overcome our dependence on imports from individual energy suppliers.\u201d He then announced that it would be constructing the country\u2019s first two LNG port terminals so it can import LNG from the U.S. and other allies instead of Russia. Munich even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/germany-mulls-extending-nuclear-plants-life-span-economy-minister-2022-02-27\/\">entertained<\/a>\u00a0the idea of keeping its last three nuclear plants open instead of closing them as scheduled this year. These decisions are an admission of\u00a0<em>Energiewende<\/em>\u2019s failures, a stark reversal of previous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/exclusive-merkel-defends-nuclear-power-exit-despite-climate-challenges-2021-11-17\/\">stubborn support<\/a>\u00a0for its flawed policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/00-640px-Neckarwestheim_Demonstration_Energiewende_jetzt_20120311_18.jpg?resize=723%2C482&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56721\" width=\"723\" height=\"482\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">America will also need to prioritize global energy security in its climate approach. We can help Europe ween off Russian gas by ramping up production of LNG, but this will require Biden to reverse policies that deter oil and gas investment. We also need to keep all nuclear plants open as long as possible, while speeding up the deployment of advanced nuclear reactors via deregulation. Most importantly, Democrats need to stop listening to radical climate organizations. Their dogmatically renewable propaganda has misled the public and transferred geopolitical power to Russia and China, yet they continue to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/media\/2020\/201217-1\">steer<\/a>&nbsp;Biden\u2019s climate policies. Climate change will never be properly addressed if the world is in a constant state of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine is the first country to become a victim of \u201cGreenpeace environmentalism,\u201d and it certainly won\u2019t be the last unless we emphatically condemn and reject the reckless energy policies that got us here.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patrick Hynes is the editorial associate with the American Conservation Coalition and a commentator with Young Voices.
