I understand that an option on a \u00a315bn plus \u201cCost Deferral Mechanism\u201d to smooth the spike over is being developed\u2026 BLOG:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6PATyquUOX\">https:\/\/t.co\/6PATyquUOX<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Faisal Islam (@faisalislam) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/faisalislam\/status\/1482279741319266305?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 15, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><br>According to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/faisalislam\/status\/1482279741319266305\" target=\"_blank\">the BBC<\/a>\u00a0the government is developing a \u00a315bn plus \u201cCost Deferral Mechanism\u201d to smooth the\u00a0expected rise\u00a0of energy bills over a period of\u00a0years, with \u201csome supporters of the PM arguing he will use this Cost Deferral Scheme, to relaunch his premiership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Johnson\u2019s political\u00a0gamble\u00a0is bad news for everyone. Rather than address the fundamental problem with UK energy supply, which has been distorted and damaged by vast subsidies to intermittent green generators (\u00a310 billion a year at present), the government seems prepared to bail out energy companies and force banks to lend them billions.<br><br>Confronted with a gaping wound Mr. Johnson has turned up with a sticking plaster.<br><br>The\u00a0plan\u00a0would set a dangerous precedent for future years. The \u00a320 billion under discussion is, after all, to cover only the cost problems arising over the last 12 months. If energy prices stay high, the government will have to provide another bailout next year, further weakening both the energy suppliers and the banks.<br><br>This raises the spectre of a fresh banking crisis, with government having to save its forced lenders from the consequences of the high risks into which Mr. Johnson\u2019s desperation has drawn them.<br><br>It would also be extremely difficult to ensure that these forced loans can be recovered. They\u00a0would be, in effect,\u00a0handouts and would set a shackling precedent for endless bailouts to the energy sector.
