&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/home\/search.html?s=&amp;authornamef=James+Tapsfield,+Political+Editor+For+Mailonline\">JAMES TAPSFIELD, POLITICAL EDITOR FOR MAILONLINE<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PUBLISHED:<\/strong>&nbsp;22:00 AEDT, 2 November 2021&nbsp;|&nbsp;<strong>UPDATED:<\/strong>&nbsp;06:07 AEDT, 3 November 2021<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/boris_johnson\/index.html\">Boris Johnson<\/a>&nbsp;today insisted COP26 is \u2018snipping the wires\u2019 of the climate change \u2018doomsday device\u2019 as he hailed deals on forests and cutting methane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a press conference wrapping up the gathering of leaders in Glasgow, the PM warned that there is a \u2018long way to go\u2019 and there must be no backsliding from countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he revived his description yesterday of global warming as a bomb that needed to be defused, James Bond style. \u2018The clock on the doomsday device is still ticking but we have got a bomb disposal team on site and they are starting to snip the wires \u2013 I hope the right wires,\u2019 he said.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gathering in Glasgow has suffered some setbacks as major polluters China confirmed a 2060 Net Zero target and India only committed to 2070 \u2013 two decades after the UK and other powers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But British officials have been encouraged by PM Narendra Modi\u2019s commitment to slash carbon emissions by 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And scores of countries have signed up to a US-EU initiative to cut methane emissions by 30 per cent by the end of the decade, in what is seen as one of the fastest ways of reducing the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Johnson rejected the idea of a referendum on whether the UK should be aiming for Net Zero by 2050, saying the country had \u2018probably had enough\u2019 of such campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he insisted the public should not be concerned about the estimated one-trillion pound cost of the drive over the next 30 years. But both\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/bBtW9uGjd8U\" target=\"_blank\">Putin<\/a>\u00a0an\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/world-news\/xi-jinping-goes-mask-free-at-npc-raising-questions-over-vaccination-status-101614926453419.html\" target=\"_blank\">Xi Jinping<\/a>\u00a0are frequently filmed maskless on their home turf.<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BoJo\u2019s pledge to save the world\u2019s forests is a grand gesture, but Britain currently relies on mass deforestation to keep the lights on. The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/oct\/19\/drax-dropped-from-index-of-green-energy-firms-amid-biomass-doubts\" target=\"_blank\">giant UK Drax biomass generator is currently supplied by \u201cchainsaw massacring\u201d forests in southern US states.<\/a>&nbsp;UK PM Boris Johnson didn\u2019t offer an explanation of what Drax will burn, after the COP26 pledge to save the world\u2019s forests ends the supply of US wood chips to British biomass generators. Perhaps there will be a a long transition period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BoJo\u2019s rejection of holding a referendum on his trillion dollar Net Zero plan is understandable. What if ordinary people unexpectedly voted \u201cno\u201d? The British people lost the trust of the the UK establishment during the Brexit referendum, when they unexpectedly rejected the government position, and voted to leave the EU.
