Can it pull it off?<\/strong><\/p><p>Walmart is attempting to erase its huge climate footprint while continuing to sell tens of millions of low-priced products<\/p><p>Every day a seemingly never-ending stream of toothbrushes, toilet paper, tape, thumbtacks, toys and other products criss-cross the globe from a network of suppliers to Walmart\u2019s more than 10,500 stores.<\/p><p>\u2026<\/p><p>Walmart has declared its mission to tackle these climate impacts, which means focusing on every part of the chain \u2013 from the electricity sourced in its stores to the palm oil in the candy bars sold on its shelves. But while some experts celebrate the scale of the retailer\u2019s efforts, others wonder whether they go far enough.<\/p><p>\u2026<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s extraordinary,\u201d said Michael Vandenbergh, co-director of the Climate Change Research Network at Vanderbilt Law School. \u201cWhat we\u2019re talking about is one of the largest and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/political-action-committees-pacs\/walmart-inc\/C00093054\/summary\/2020\">most conservative<\/a>&nbsp;companies in the world making a range of commitments that government is not requiring them to make.\u201d<\/p><p>\u2026<\/p><p>But some criticize&nbsp;<strong>Walmart\u2019s zero emissions goal for not including the company\u2019s supply chain<\/strong>, which accounts for the vast majority of Walmart\u2019s overall climate impact. \u201cWithout that, drastic emissions reduction will never happen,\u201d said Souparna Lahiri, co-author of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporateaccountability.org\/media\/press-release-the-big-con\/\">report on net zero<\/a>&nbsp;by Corporate Accountability<\/p><p>\u2026<\/p><cite>Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/sep\/13\/walmart-climate-change-plan-can-it-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/sep\/13\/walmart-climate-change-plan-can-it-work<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Murdoch Media \/ Newscorp\u2019s apparent attempt to cosy up to the greens is going even worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>News Corp hasn\u2019t seen the light on climate \u2013 they\u2019re just updating their tactics<\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/author\/ketan-j\/\">Ketan Joshi<\/a>&nbsp;<br>6 September 2021<\/p><p>Have you heard the good news? One of the key institutions holding back climate action in Australia \u2013 Rupert Murdoch\u2019s News Corporation \u2013 is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeoHickman\/status\/1434583657612709895\">suddenly<\/a>&nbsp;on Team Climate Action! Today, the Sydney Morning Herald revealed that the company\u2019s Australian outlets are set to launch a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/companies\/rupert-murdoch-newspapers-24-hour-news-channel-to-champion-net-zero-emissions-20210905-p58oyx.html?utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1630869823\">campaign<\/a>&nbsp;urging \u201cthe world\u2019s leading economies\u201d to embrace a target of net zero emissions by 2050; to be fronted by columnist Joe Hildebrand. The details aren\u2019t out yet, but I contend that we can comfortably predict what it will look like.<\/p><p>\u2026<\/p><p><strong>What might reasonably seem like a surprising change of heart in News Corp\u2019s stance on climate is actually a long-term tactical shift<\/strong>&nbsp;that has been occurring for at least a few years.&nbsp;<strong>Whatever policies they failed to destroy through their earlier campaigns, they will try and reframe through racist, nationalistic, technocratic and pro-business frames.<\/strong><\/p><p>Whatever policies they can delay or destroy, they\u2019ll simply keep running scare campaigns about, insisting that \u2018the balance isn\u2019t right\u2019, and that the threat of climate action is greater than the threat of climate change, as they always have (in Australia, News Corp\u2019s partnerships with Google and Facebook mean these campaigns to destabilise climate action are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/earleyedition\/status\/1425058225422888960\">growing more powerful and more harmful every day<\/a>). When the next federal election comes around, the \u201cCOSTS OF NET ZERO\u201d scare campaigns will ramp up in Australia as they are in the UK, and News Corp will be at the forefront, pleading that acting too fast will cause catastrophe. Absolutely mark my damn words: this is what will happen.<\/p><p>Net zero by 2050 isn\u2019t enough. We\u2019ll know that the denialism has truly ended when organisations like News Corp treat the IPCC\u2019s latest report like it\u2019s real. That is, when they acknowledge that every additional unit of greenhouse gases causes harm to life on Earth, and that actions to stop their release must be as fast as possible. That climate change is an emergency that requires rapid action to wind down the fossil fuel industry in a just and equitable way, and that its replacement must be grown to full size with just as much passion and urgency.<\/p><p>\u2026<\/p><cite>Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/news-corp-hasnt-seen-the-light-on-climate-theyre-just-updating-their-tactics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/news-corp-hasnt-seen-the-light-on-climate-theyre-just-updating-their-tactics\/<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even Amazon\u2019s Bezos, who has&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-climate-change-jeff-bezos-bee1aea9cffc377400048dcb5b7405f0\" target=\"_blank\">promised to spend billions of dollars by 2030 on the climate movement<\/a>, saw much of his reputation as a green champion unravel thanks to a single PR misstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Amazon \u2018illegally retaliated\u2019 against climate activists<\/strong><\/p><p>Published 5 April<\/p><p><strong>US labour officials have found that Amazon retaliated illegally when it fired two employees who had spoke out about the firm\u2019s environmental practices and warehouse safety.<\/strong><\/p><p>The National Labor Relations Board was investigating a complaint brought by Emily Cunningham and Maren Costa, who had helped organise the group Amazon Employees for Climate Justice.<\/p><p>They were fired last April.<\/p><p>Amazon said it disagreed with the finding.<\/p><p>\u201cWe support every employee\u2019s right to criticise their employer\u2019s working conditions, but that does not come with blanket immunity against our internal policies, all of which are lawful,\u201d an Amazon spokesman said on Monday.&nbsp;<\/p><p>\u201cWe terminated these employees not for talking publicly about working conditions, safety, or sustainability, but rather, for repeatedly violating internal policies.\u201d<\/p><p>\u2026<\/p><cite>Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-56641847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-56641847<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you think about it, there is no reasonable means by which any corporation can appease the green movement, because the green movement is not a single entity.
