{"id":151340,"date":"2021-07-17T12:08:57","date_gmt":"2021-07-17T10:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/climatescience.press\/?p=151340"},"modified":"2021-07-17T12:08:58","modified_gmt":"2021-07-17T10:08:58","slug":"greenland-votes-to-suspend-oil-and-uranium-exploration-because-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/climatescience.press\/?p=151340","title":{"rendered":"Greenland Votes to Suspend Oil and Uranium Exploration because Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/03Bu02Ulv.jpeg?resize=723%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-151341\" width=\"723\" height=\"427\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Guest essay by Eric Worrall<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greenland Government, which currently survives on handouts from Denmark, has voted not to encourage the development of local oil and mineral resources, because of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Greenland suspends oil exploration because of climate change<\/strong><\/p><p>COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) \u2014 The left-leaning government on Greenland which could be sitting on vast oil reserves, has decided to suspend all oil exploration off the the world\u2019s largest island, calling it is \u201ca natural step\u201d because the Arctic government \u201ctakes the climate crisis seriously.\u201d<\/p><p>No oil has yet been found in the waters of Greenland which had ambitions that hydrocarbons would be crucial to help Greenlanders realize their long-held dream of cutting the annual subsidy of 3.4 billion kroner ($540 million) from Denmark that currently rules out full independence.<\/p><p>Global warming means that the retreating ice could uncover potential oil and mineral resources which, if successfully tapped, could dramatically change the fortunes of the semiautonomous Danish territory of 57,000 people.<\/p><p>\u201cThe future does not lie in oil. The future belongs to the renewable energy and in that respect we have much more to gain,\u201d the Greenland government said in a statement. It \u201cwants to take co-responsibility for combating the global climate crisis.\u201d<\/p><p>\u2026<\/p><cite>Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-business-climate-environment-and-nature-climate-change-6ac3a74848b2cf7c89d18c348b19e3a7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-business-climate-environment-and-nature-climate-change-6ac3a74848b2cf7c89d18c348b19e3a7<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my opinion this is rather sad news for local Greenlanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suicide_in_Greenland\" target=\"_blank\">Greenland suffers the highest rate of youth suicide in the world<\/a>, endemic poverty, a total lack of opportunity, and rampant alcohol and drug abuse \u2013 possibly because they are mostly a government handout economy.
