She told the&nbsp;<em>Observer<\/em>&nbsp;that although advances had been made at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jun\/14\/promises-and-protests-at-the-g7-in-cornwall-photo-essay\">G7 meeting<\/a>&nbsp;in Cornwall last weekend, progress had not been made on honouring past commitments to find&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sites\/un2.un.org\/files\/100_billion_climate_finance_report.pdf\">$100bn (\u00a372.5bn) a year<\/a>&nbsp;to help developing countries invest in green technologies.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re still very far away from being fully confident of having a full success at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/cop26-glasgow-climate-change-conference-2021\">Cop26<\/a>,\u201d she said. Kerosene, known in those days at \u201cCoal Oil\u201d, was easy to produce, cheap, smelled better than animal-based fuels when burned, and did not spoil on the shelf as whale oil did.&nbsp;<strong>The public abandoned whale oil lamps almost overnight.<\/strong>&nbsp;By 1860, at least 30 kerosene plants were in production in the United States, and whale oil was ultimately driven off the market.
